Job summary

Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist 2 to join the clinical team in the Medical Clinic. The MT will calibrate and operate equipment, interpret tests, perform venipunctures, manage specimens, and support HIPAA compliant data handling and quality improvement efforts while collaborating with campus health services.

Candidates must hold a Louisiana license (CLS-Generalist or Specialist) and a relevant bachelor’s degree with minimum experience

Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist license
  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science plus one year of experience as a medical technologist; OR Bachelor's degree in a biological, physical, or chemical science plus two years of experience as a medical technologist.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate and operate equipment; perform quality improvement checks and document results.
  • Interpret, verify and report test results; notify providers of critical values; manage lab data and reporting.
  • Perform venipunctures and specimen collection; ensure proper labeling and handling; inform patients about tests and fees.
  • Assist with data entry and distribution of laboratory and billing information; maintain HIPAA compliance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

The Medical Technologist (MT) is a member of a multi-disciplinary team in the Medical Clinic, including primary care, gynecology and specialty care. The MT performs a variety of clinical diagnostic tests with an emphasis on recognizing and resolving problems and applying interpretive judgment. The MT is responsible for employing practice standards and supporting quality improvement efforts. The MT should have a deep appreciation for a collaborative care model, partnering with all areas of the SHC, and be committed to advancing the divisional priorities of commitment to quality, communicating a sense of home, and designing with everyone in mind, and cultivating a working relationship with Our Lady of the Lake Health.

Job Responsibilities
  • 30% - Calibrate and operate equipment and conduct performance checks with appropriate documentation. Establish and monitor quality improvement programs to ensure data accuracy and reliability. Identify and investigate problems with testing, instruments and results, documenting appropriately. Serve as a technical consultant.
  • 25% - Interpret, verify and report test results, utilizing the lab information system and the clinic management system/electronic health record. Consult with the laboratory team if testing and reporting concerns arise. Notify medical providers of critical values according to procedure. Perform inventory management, quality monitoring, data analysis, peer competency and prepare reports for quality assessment.
  • 20% - Perform venipunctures and specimen collection. Follow appropriate safety protocols. Label and prepare specimens for analysis, storage and transport to reference laboratories. Prepare lab requests for specimen collection and processing. Maintain working knowledge of all lab tests and associated fees and inform patients accordingly. Collect immunization forms and assist students with related questions.
  • 20% - Assist with data entry and distribution of laboratory, insurance and billing information, correspondence and medical reports, maintaining strict patient confidentiality and compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Complete required trainings as assigned by the university and the Student Health Center. Support quality improvement and accreditation efforts.
  • 5% - Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist license plus one of the following:

A bachelor's degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science plus one year of experience as a medical technologist; OR A bachelor's degree in a biological, physical, or chemical science plus two years of experience as a medical technologist.

Special Requirements/Expectations

Due to the nature of the position and/or position responsibilities, this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.

In accordance with University Policy Statement 18, this position is considered essential and may be required to report or stay on campus in the event of an emergency or closure.

May be required to work occasional nights and weekends.
