Job summary

Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to provide accurate laboratory services in alignment with hospital standards. The MLT must support the mission of delivering Sacred Work to all who enter the doors of Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas.

Responsibilities include routine shift start-up with quality controls, instrument maintenance, and reporting results under supervision.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree in related field or MLS/CLS credentials.
• Completion of approved training program for Medical Laboratory Technician (preferred).
• Clinical laboratory experience within the last 10 years.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine shift start-up, including quality controls and documentation, and handles instrumentation maintenance.
• Processes diagnostic tests and reports results under supervision with attention to patient condition.
• Uses standard precautions to minimize exposure, disposes of waste properly, and replaces biohazard containers as needed.
• Assists in quality assurance through variance reporting and participates in QA activities.
• Maintains competency in equipment operation, troubleshooting, and timely notifications.
• Notifies physicians and team of corrected or critical results with proper documentation.

Summary/Objective

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) provides laboratory services to patients in accordance with accepted practices and Departmental and Hospital standards of care. The Medical Laboratory Technician must support the mission of providing Sacred Work to all who enter the doors of Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas.

Essential Job Duties

• Performs routine shift start-up, including quality controls and documentation of these controls, performs appropriate shift maintenance of instrumentation. Utilizes specialized knowledge of Laboratory Services principles in performing general duties.
• Demonstrates general and specialized knowledge of Laboratory Services principles in the provision of diagnostic services under the supervision of a Medical Technologist, while processing reliable test results to include analysis, calculations and reporting results, utilizing critical skills related to results and the patient’s clinical condition.
• Performs all procedures utilizing Standard Precautions to minimize the potential for exposure to infectious processes, disposes of all instrumentation, reagents and patient wastes appropriately to minimize exposure potential, including replacing biohazard containers when the are ¾ full.
• Assists in quality assurance by utilizing the online Variance reporting and participates in quality control, performance improvement and proficiency testing activities within the Department.
• Maintains high degree of competency in the operation of equipment in the performance of Laboratory Services testing to include trouble‑shooting, minor repair and notification to necessary parties.
• Notifies physician and/or other members of the health care team of corrected results in a timely manner with appropriate documentation in the computer system, and notifies charge nurse of Critical results in a timely manner with immediate reporting, documenting time, name of person and read back verification in the computer system.

Required Education And Experience

• Associate's Degree in related field or current credentials as MLS or CLS
• Completion of approved training program for Medical Laboratory Technician preferred
• Clinical laboratory setting experience within the last 10 years

Required License/Certifications

• Must be CLIA qualified for moderate or high complexity testing
• AMT or ASCP certification or certification eligible
