Job summary

Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, Oregon, is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our night-shift team. Under supervision, you will perform a variety of laboratory tests, maintain equipment, collect specimens, and ensure timely, accurate results in patient care.

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager or a Medical Technologist, the Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of laboratory tests in accordance with hospital policies and procedures; provides for operation, care, and maintenance of scientific equipment; collects specimens from patients ranging in age from neonate to geriatric, and is responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of such duties and procedures.

Job Requirements

• Knowledge of /Skill/Ability to: Expected to maintain full confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
• Strong written, oral and organization skills required.
• Attention to detail is required.
• Experience with blood collection technique on all age groups.
• Must be able to perform high complex testing.
• Must have working knowledge of pre-analytical, analytical, as well as post analytical testing variables and how to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance thus working toward achieving the highest standard for clinical laboratory testing.
• Computer skills, excellent customer service, and being an ongoing liaison between clients and providers.
• Knowledge in laboratory compliance and Medical Necessity.
• Must be able to multitask under stressful situations.
• Under the supervision of the Medical Technologist, must be able to address questions from clients and providers.

License/Certification

• MLT (ASCP) or equivalent registration, or MLT eligible under Medicare laboratory regulations (must obtain within 6 months of hire).
• BLS certification required through American Heart Association.
• Must provide a copy of High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education and/or Experience

• Associate's Degree in appropriate field.
• No previous experience is required in addition to clinical training, however at least 1-year experience is desired.
• Must provide copy of High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance

• Standing and/or walking about most of the shift;
• lifts, carries, pushes, pulls, etc. light weight (under 50 lbs) equipment, materials and supplies for less than half the shift;
• may occasionally work in a strained or difficult position.
• There is some exposure to hazards that might cause relatively serious injury or illness if proper safety precautions are not taken in dealing with patient specimens, acids, and diseased tissue.
