Qualifications

• Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
• ASCP BOC Medical Laboratory Technician certification.
• At least 1 year of clinical laboratory experience.
• Proficiency with electronic laboratory computer systems and middleware.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment, instruments, and results.

Responsibilities

• Perform sample assessment, receiving, accessioning, processing, and testing to support high quality laboratory results.
• Prepare specimens for testing and ensure correct patient identification using two identifiers.
• Evaluate specimen acceptability and manage receipt in the LIS and middleware.
• Ensure correct labeling and order evaluation in the laboratory information system.
• Conduct routine laboratory testing using automated and non-automated methods per procedures.
• Recognize normal/abnormal values and notify accordingly.
• Troubleshoot computer data problems and instrument issues.
• Communicate testing information clearly to medical and lay persons.
• Process specimens and interpret results based on sample type and test.
• Create and review test/specimen pending worklists.
• Utilize the LIS and middleware proficiently.
• Notify and document critical results as per policy.
• Maintain bench supplies and ensure reagents are ordered at par levels.
• Assist with training and orientation of staff and students.
• Participate in continuing education and uphold Standards of Behavior.
• Engage in process improvement and document results.
• Perform quality control, instrument maintenance, and competency activities.

Job Description Summary

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) support high quality laboratory testing in a clinical laboratory. MLTs prepare specimens for testing, perform routine laboratory tests, perform quality control and maintenance procedures, recognize computer data problems, troubleshoot laboratory instruments, communicate technical information to medical and lay persons, assist with training laboratory personnel in routine procedures, participate in continuing education, recognize normal and abnormal values, and model Standards of Behavior in daily interactions and activities. (MLT I <1 year experience and MLT II >1 year experience)

Responsibilities

• Perform sample assessment, receiving, accessioning, processing, and testing to support high quality laboratory patient results and supply/stock maintenance activities.
• Prepare specimens for testing and perform positive patient identification using two identifiers.
• Evaluate specimen acceptability and perform specimen receipt in the electronic laboratory computer system and middleware.
• Ensure correct labeling practices and order evaluation and assessment using the electronic laboratory computer system.
• Conduct routine laboratory testing using both automated and non-automated methods according to established procedures.
• Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values and complete all warranted notifications.
• Identify and troubleshoot computer data problems and laboratory instrument issues.
• Communicate technical testing information to medical and lay persons following Standards of Behaviors.
• Perform appropriate specimen processing, testing, and interpretation based on sample type and test.
• Create and review test/specimen pending worklists.
• Proficiently use the electronic laboratory computer system and departmental middleware.
• Notify and document critical test results using established policies.
• Maintain bench supplies and ensure reagents are quality controlled and ordered at designated par levels.
• Support test and instrument validation activities.
• Assist in the orientation, training, and feedback for new staff, students, and residents.
• Participate in continuing education and model Standards of Behavior in daily interactions.
• Engage in process improvement activities and document results.
• Perform quality control testing, instrument maintenance, and competency activities, completing documentation on time.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) or equivalent.
• At least one year of clinical experience (greater than one year for MLT II).
• Proficiency with electronic laboratory computer systems and middleware.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment, instruments, and results.

Career Ladder Position

This is a Career Ladder Position. Internal candidates are required to submit and meet Path and Lab ICCE Career Ladder requirements. External candidates are required to complete Path and Lab ICCE Career Ladder requirements within 90 days of starting the position.
