Job summary

The Iowa Clinic is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Central Iowa laboratory team. This on-site role involves collecting specimens, performing tests, and ensuring quality control while maintaining patient confidentiality and safety.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited two-year medical laboratory technician program.
  • ASCP certification or equivalent.
  • Previous medical laboratory technician experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of specimen labeling and patient identification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent attendance and adhere to departmental work schedules.
  • Collect blood, urine, and other specimens for laboratory testing while following established procedures and ensuring specimen integrity.
  • Verify patient identification, review test requisitions for accuracy and completeness, and properly label all collected specimens with required documentation.
  • Prepare specimens and perform laboratory testing, analyses, and quality control procedures within the scope of training and established policies.
  • Identify testing inconsistencies, take appropriate corrective action, and seek assistance when needed to resolve issues.
  • Perform and document routine maintenance, instrument checks, troubleshooting activities, and corrective actions on laboratory equipment.
  • Complete clerical and administrative responsibilities, including test requisitions, patient billing documentation, quality control reporting, and laboratory data entry.
  • Maintain and enhance professional knowledge through continuing education and professional development activities.
  • Follow all safety, universal precaution, infection control, and workplace cleanliness standards.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism and discretion in all patient interactions.
