Job summary

Reid Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to perform high and moderate complexity tests in a fast-paced hospital lab. The role supports patient diagnostics under supervision, documents orders, processes specimens, and ensures test accuracy and timely reporting.

Responsibilities include entering results into the LIS, maintaining QC procedures, and assisting with QA & I tasks. Educational requirements include an MLT diploma with certification eligibility within 2 years of hire.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree from an accredited MLT program or equivalent eligible for MLT certification.
  • Bachelor degree is preferred, in biological/chemical/physical science.
  • Must be certified within 2 years of hire and maintain certification.
  • Experience or internship in a clinical laboratory is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Documents verbal orders for laboratory tests.
  • Logs specimens into the LIS and ensures correct test ordering.
  • Performs analyses per procedure manuals and meets turnaround times.
  • Monitors quality control results and documents actions taken.
  • Enters test results into the LIS and notifies appropriate units of critical values.
  • Maintains a clean work area and assists with QA & I activities.

Rotating weekends and holidays and flex schedule as needed**About the Position**Under the technical supervision of his/her immediate supervisor, the MLT performs high and moderate complexity laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner to provide information for diagnosing and combating disease. Assumes responsibility and accountability for following the established policies and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department and as defined by the Mission Statement of the hospital.**Overview of Responsibilities*** **Documents verbal orders for laboratory tests** + Logs all specimens drawn into the laboratory information system using proper procedures.* **Processes Non-Admit Specimens** + Admits patients in LIS using proper procedures. + Orders correct tests and logs in the specimens.* **Performs analyses on the laboratory test directory** + Performs all procedures as outlined in the appropriate procedure manual protocol. + Learns new procedures and demonstrates competence as they are added to test directory. + Performs procedures within the stated turn-around times. + Completes work during assigned shift and leaves minimal amount for the next shift. + Responds to changes in work as necessary; continually uses time to departmental advantage. + Analyzes control materials for each procedure; documents quality control procedures performed. + Documents action taken on out of control QC results. + Monitors quality control results for trends and deviations. + Performs and documents appropriate preventative maintenance procedures. + Monitors and assesses maintenance weekly for completion.* **Enters the test results into the computer** + Verifies that the result being entered is for the correct patient. + Footnotes abnormal appearance of specimen. + Performs basic problem solving of abnormal or atypical results. + Calls Critical Results to appropriate nursing units; documents notification of Critical Values using canned footnote in computer. + Responsible and accountable for results verified. + Reviews Workcenter Activity Reports for accuracy.* Maintains a clean and orderly work area.* Helps substitute for technical supervisor in their absence.* Notifies the supervisor when supplies, test kits, and reagents should be ordered.* Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age-specific population criteria, i.e., geriatrics, adults, pediatrics, and neonates.* Demonstrates appropriate troubleshooting capabilities; refers problems to the appropriate individual when indicated. Demonstrates ability to perform complex problem solving of abnormal or atypical results.* Uses independent judgement and knowledge to perform assigned tasks.* Participates in hospital and departmental quality assessment and improvement (QA & I) activities as required. Monitors results and helps implement corrective action.* Develops laboratory techniques and procedures and reviews current procedures in focused areas as assigned by the technical supervisor.* Conducts research in conjunction with the technical supervisor.* Assists the technical supervisor in the testing, evaluation, and selection of new equipment.* Assists the technical supervisor/Lead technologists in the set up and training of operators for new equipment.* Responsible for assuring that CAP proficiency results are performed and returned in a timely manner.* Responsible for coordinating the instruction of students and new employees as directed by the technical supervisor. May be required to oversee the work of non-independent practitioners and trainees.* Develops and presents continuing education programs for the laboratory staff.* Core Laboratory Employees: Provides staffing coverage for the Microbiology area as needed including gram stain reporting, specimen processing, molecular testing.* **Microbiology** + Performs plate readings and susceptibility testing.*This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities as deemed necessary.***Education & Experience*** **• Education Required: Associate degree from a Medical Laboratory Technician program or other degree and experience that makes the employee eligible for MLT certification. • Education Preferred: Bachelor of Science in biological, chemical or physical science. • Experience Required: None • Experience Preferred: Completion of a Clinical Laboratory internship. • Specify the minimum experience preferred for the incumbent to be considered for the position.****Licensure & Certification*** Must be certified within 2 years of hire and maintain certification
