Qualifications

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs a wide range of complex laboratory procedures in support of patient diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) works independently to perform testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Immunology, and Blood Bank while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with regulatory standards.

The Generalist MLS serves as an essential member of the healthcare team by producing reliable laboratory results, maintaining laboratory instrumentation, and supporting physicians and providers with critical diagnostic information.

Essential Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing

• Perform moderate and high-complexity laboratory testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Immunology, and Blood Bank.
• Analyze, interpret, and verify laboratory test results.
• Ensure timely reporting of patient test results and critical values.
• Evaluate specimen integrity and determine appropriate testing procedures.
• Perform manual and automated laboratory testing according to established protocols.

Quality Assurance & Quality Control

• Conduct daily quality control procedures and document results.
• Investigate and resolve quality control discrepancies.
• Participate in proficiency testing and quality improvement activities.
• Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and state regulatory requirements.
• Assist with laboratory inspections, audits, and accreditation activities.

Instrumentation & Maintenance

• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory analyzers and equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer specifications.
• Identify equipment issues and coordinate service when necessary.
• Document maintenance and corrective actions.

Patient Care Support

• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding laboratory results and testing requirements.
• Assist with specimen collection and processing as needed.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA requirements.
• Contribute to a culture of patient safety and service excellence.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related scientific field from an accredited institution.

Certification

• Current ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or equivalent certification required.

Experience

• Previous hospital laboratory experience preferred.
• Generalist laboratory experience highly desirable.
• New graduates with MLS certification may be considered depending on facility needs.
