Job summary

Henry Ford Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist for the Macomb Hospital, with afternoon shifts and a 36-hour work week. MLS professionals rotate through all departments to maintain competency, collaborating closely with ER and outpatient teams.

The role emphasizes hands-on testing, clinical judgment, and maintaining quality and compliance in a fast-paced, supportive environment. A bachelor’s degree and eligible certification are required.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Coursework must align with duties of the specific section Medical Laboratory discipline position and meet education Eligibility Routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist.
• OR possesses a categorical scientist level certification as a BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB
• OR has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications. Requires six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
• Certification at the technologist, or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency, such as ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, or HEW is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform Laboratory Testing – Execute routine and complex biological, chemical, cytological, hematological, histologic, immunological, microscopic, and bacteriological test procedures on laboratory specimens using manual techniques and automated instruments.
• Apply Clinical Judgment– Evaluate instrument performance and quality control results, connect findings to disease states, and identify root causes of unexpected results.
• Maintain Laboratory Equipment– Perform calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment and information systems.
• Ensure Quality and Compliance– Follow departmental and institutional policies regarding compliance, quality, safety, environmental standards, and infection control.
