Job summary

UPMC Shadyside is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist to join the Special Stem Cell Laboratory. This role involves hands-on processing of cellular therapy products, direct patient interaction during transplant procedures, and participation in a rotating on-call schedule.

The ideal candidate holds an MLS degree (or equivalent) with ASCP certification or equivalent, and has hospital lab experience with strong knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems.

Qualifications

  • MLS degree or equivalent required
  • ASCP or equivalent certification preferred
  • At least two years' experience in a role equivalent to MLS
  • Hospital laboratory experience preferred
  • 5 years hematology/blood bank/flow experience strongly preferred
  • 4 years MLS experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Follow procedures for processing cellular therapy products
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures accurately
  • Provide first-line supervision of the section/department as delegated
  • Conduct test development and methodology/equipment evaluation
  • Maintain knowledge of techniques, instruments and test results
  • Operate and maintain equipment with preventive maintenance and QC checks
  • Perform High Complexity Testing as defined by PA DOH
  • Recognize abnormal results and follow protocols
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens or results and act accordingly
  • Train and orient new staff and students

Are you ready to make a life-changing difference every day? UPMC Shadyside is seeking a skilled and dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our cutting-edge Special Stem Cell Laboratory. In this vital role, you'll work in a dynamic environment where science and compassion come together to create life-saving cellular therapies.

This position primarily follows daylight hours, Monday through Friday. However, it does include participation in a rotating on-call schedule and requires flexibility to accommodate patient care demands. While the core schedule is consistent, adaptability is essential in this unique lab setting.

Responsibilities
  • Follows established procedures for the processing of cellular therapy products.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department temporarily as delegated.
  • Conduct, direct, or assist with test development and methodology/equipment evaluation, selection, and implementation.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, their interrelationships and physiological conditions affecting test results.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs. Use reagents and supplies cost-effectively; monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
  • Performs High Complexity Testing (as defined by PA DOH) without direct supervision.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Recognize factors that affect measurements and results and initiate the necessary corrective action according to established protocols. Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and act as outlined in predetermined protocols.
  • Train and orient new employees, students, and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.
  • Prefer 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.
  • 5 years clinical hematology/blood bank/flow experience is strongly preferred
  • 4 years of MLS experience strongly preferred
Licensure, Certifications, And Clearances
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred.
