Job summary

FMOL Health in Lafayette, LA is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant to support front-end specimen handling and the workflow of the laboratory. The role assists lab personnel, performs some non-complex tests, and supports clerical duties under supervision.

Candidates must hold a High School Diploma or equivalent and obtain the Louisiana Medical Lab Assistant license within one year of employment. Familiarity with computer applications and multiple software systems is expected.

• Must obtain Louisiana License as Medical Lab Assistant by LSBME within one year of employment.

Responsibilities

• Independently coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties/workload.
• Maintains inventory supply in work area to ensure efficient departmental operations.
• Demonstrates initiative in change adaptation, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions.
• Ability to perform non complex laboratory testing.
• Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work areas and equipment.
• Responsible for all pre analytical specimen handling and facilitating workflow in and out of laboratory.
• Adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures.
• Complies with regulatory standards applicable to area(s) of responsibility.
• Interacts with coworkers to promote a harmonious and cooperative work environment.
• Interacts with clients, patients, physicians and other hospital personnel to maintain good customer relations and quality health care.
• Assists other areas when workload allows or when a customer service need arises.
• Effectively communicates pertinent information to ensure continuity of care.

• Understands specimen requirements for each test and evaluates specimen for proper identification and integrity through visual checks and result evaluation
• Responsible for ensuring proper specimen identification and the ability to recognize discrepancy. Includes troubleshooting and documentation.
• Follows protocol for instrument maintenance, running controls and accepting, verifying and recording q.c. results.
• Recognizes and refers problems and questions outside of own expertise to appropriate supervisory personnel.
