Job description

Job Overview

Night Shift The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) under general supervision will perform chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.


Responsibilities

Collect specimens from patients as ordered, analyze specimens, record results, and communicate with appropriate hospital staff, collaborating with other departments to integrate lab services in patient care.


Adjust test procedures for specific patient requirements (adult, geriatric, pediatric), interpret data to identify age‑specific needs for patient care, and report abnormal or unusual test results.


Monitor lab equipment and test results produced, provide technical guidance, and evaluate new testing methods and procedures.


Perform routine preventive maintenance on assigned equipment per established schedule; verify instrument functioning by checking and calibrating lab instruments; and document data and record repairs, replacements, and maintenance in instrument logs.


Ensure standards of quality control are maintained, monitor staff compliance with quality control, safety and governmental regulatory standards, and inform the director of any compliance program problems.


Perform quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical procedures and data, and adhere to clinical quality control standards.


Conduct periodic checks to ensure availability and quality of chemicals, regulate supply inventories, and make purchasing requisitions.


Respond to stat orders as required.


Assist with orientation of new employees and medical technology students.


Attend and participate in departmental meetings, in‑services, and quality improvement programs.


Qualifications

Associate Degree or equivalent in Medical Lab Technician.


Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within 12 months of employment.
