Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient-centered care by providing timely and accurate patient results in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician ensures test accuracy through compliance with regulatory requirements, performance and review of quality control, and active participation in performance improvement activities.

Job Description

Job Duties

• Ensures accurate and clinically relevant communication with patients, families, and co-workers during handoffs and other interactions to optimize patient outcomes.
• Properly identifies patients and samples during all phases of testing.
• Performs analyses on biological specimens such as blood, urine, stool, body fluids, and tissues.
• Performs, evaluates, and documents calibration and quality control, resolving issues as needed.
• Maintains, troubleshoots, and resolves issues with assays and instruments.
• Follows laboratory procedures for test analysis, reporting, and record keeping.
• Communicates effectively with medical personnel, patients, and families.
• Prioritizes workload to ensure timely reporting of results.
• Participates in at least one continuing education activity annually to maintain and improve skills.
• Seeks opportunities for process improvement and assists in procedure writing, updating, and validation.
• Acts as a resource for laboratory medicine information.
• Uses laboratory information system (LIS) to enter results and generate reports.
• Educates and trains MLT and MLS students.
• May perform specimen collection, including phlebotomy, with skill and compassion.
• Assists providers with special procedures as needed.
• Follows safety guidelines, reports unsafe conditions, incidents, and injuries promptly.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and regulatory requirements (CAP, COLA, CLIA, TJC, FDA).
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure, multi-task, and prioritize.
• Skill in using laboratory instrumentation and LIS.
• Critical thinking regarding test results and patient conditions.
• Ability to troubleshoot quality control and equipment issues.
• Attention to detail and clear documentation skills.

Professional Experience

• Experience preferred but not required.

Education

• Required: Associate's degree in medical laboratory, biological, or chemical science, or completion of a 50-week US military medical laboratory training program.

Licensure, Certification, Registration

• Required: Certification as an MLT(ASCP) or MLT(AMT) within 18 months of hire or transfer.
