Job summary

Novant Health seeks a capable laboratory professional to perform all laboratory procedures, ensure quality control, collect specimens, process and report test results, and assist in evaluating new techniques. The role includes orientation and training of staff on equipment and software as needed.

The ideal candidate holds a 2-year associate degree in science or equivalent, with ASCP/AMT MT certification eligibility and a willingness to obtain certification within 12 months.

Qualifications

• 2 Year / Associate Degree required in chemical, physical, or biological science, or medical laboratory or equivalent education or training.
• One year experience as laboratory scientist in BB, Flow, and Micro; clinical internships of 12 months meet this requirement, preferred.
• MLT certification (or eligible) from ASCP or AMT, required.
• New graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of hire; failure to do so may lead to termination.
• ASCP CMP and AMT CCP participation for new cert holders is required as applicable.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and ability to perform the full range of laboratory tests.
• Ability to read instrumentation manuals and follow written protocols.
• Ability to work independently and communicate clearly.

What We Offer

What We're Looking For

• Education: 2 Year / Associate Degree, required. Associate degree in chemical, physical, or biological science, or medical laboratory or equivalent education or training OR successfully completed military training of 50 or more weeks.
• Experience: One year experience as laboratory scientist for specialty areas (BB, Flow, and Micro). (Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred.
• Licensure/Certification/Registration: MLT certification (or eligible) from ASCP or AMT, required.
• Additional Skills Required:
  • New graduates must obtain certification within 12-months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
  • All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
  • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
  • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
