Job summary

Emerson Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for a per diem role. You will work under the Evening Lab Supervisor and a seasoned Medical Technologist, performing diagnostic tests on blood, body fluids, and samples with a focus on accuracy and patient care.

Responsibilities include specimen processing, reporting results, QA/QC, and supporting phlebotomy and equipment maintenance, while adhering to safety standards and continuous learning in a dynamic lab setting.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in chemical, biological, or medical laboratory science or technology (ASCP may substitute).
• At least 1 year of experience in laboratory areas; new grads welcomed.
• ASCP certification preferred.
• Strong knowledge of automated and manual lab methods.
• Proficiency in English and good communication.
• Detail-oriented with patient confidentiality mindset.

Responsibilities

• Process and analyze specimens accurately and report results promptly.
• Recognize and communicate critical values to care teams.
• Troubleshoot unusual cases and verify specimen integrity.
• Perform daily quality control and calibrate equipment.
• Support lab operations including phlebotomy, labeling, inventory, and maintenance.
• Serve as a technical resource and train others on new procedures.
• Stay updated on OSHA, CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission standards and education.
• Contribute to ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

• Recognize and immediately communicate critical values to care teams and physicians.
• Use your professional judgment to troubleshoot unusual cases and ensure specimen integrity.
• Perform and document quality control checks daily, keeping equipment calibrated, accurate, and reliable.
• Support lab operations by assisting with phlebotomy, specimen labeling, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
• Act as a technical resource, helping colleagues and training on new equipment or procedures.
• Stay sharp by keeping up with OSHA, CLIA, CAP, and Joint Commission standards, as well as continuing education.
• Be part of ongoing quality improvement efforts and contribute to an environment where excellence is the standard.

What You Bring

• Associate degree in chemical, biological, or medical laboratory science or technology required (ASCP certification accepted in lieu of degree).
• At least one year of experience in all lab areas preferred, new grads from accredited Medical Lab Tech programs welcome!
• ASCP certification preferred.
• Strong technical knowledge of both automated and manual lab methods.
• Problem-solving skills, manual dexterity for venipuncture and equipment calibration, and the ability to think critically in varied situations.
• Proficiency with computers and the ability to clearly communicate in English.
• A detail-oriented mindset with a passion for accuracy, confidentiality, and patient-centered care.
