Urology of Virginia in Virginia Beach seeks an experienced Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist to join a large specialty group's Clinical Lab. This 40-hour week role features day shifts, with rotating weekend hours in microbiology for those fully independent in microbiology.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an accredited MLT program with 3 years of clinical lab experience, microbiology preferred.
  • ASCP/Board certification (board eligible considered).
  • Experience with microbiology testing, quality control, and proficiency testing.

Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiology tests for urine cultures using manual and automated methods per CLSI standards.
  • Execute quality control procedures and troubleshoot outliers.
  • Participate in proficiency testing across applicable lab tests.
  • Crosstrain to other lab areas as needed.
  • Maintain documentation in QA programs, including equipment records and logs.
  • Utilize Orchard LIS and Epic EMR for reporting and communication.
  • Manage patient lab results and provide timely final reports to providers.
  • Support specimen collection guidelines and training for staff.
  • Accession and process specimens; assist with validations and references lab issues.
  • Maintain lab equipment and monitor supplies; comply with CLIA and OSHA.

Job Overview

Experienced Medical Lab Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist to work in a large specialty group’s Clinical Lab. This position consists of day shift hours, Monday – Friday, to include flexible weekend hours for microbiology (rotating) for those fully independent in microbiology. This position is 40 hours per week.

Primary:
  • Perform microbiology tests for urine cultures, utilizing both manual and automated methods, as appropriate by CLSI standards. Successful candidate must meet CLIA high complexity testing personnel requirements
  • Perform quality control procedures as outlined by lab procedures, with troubleshooting and resolution of outliers, as needed
  • Participate in the performance of proficiency testing on all applicable lab tests
  • Crosstrain to other areas of the laboratory as deemed appropriate and necessary.
  • Maintain proper documentation as described in the quality assurance program, to include equipment records, maintenance logs, e-worksheets, specimen rejection documentation and quality control logs
  • Utilize and maintain specimen logs, worksheets, and laboratory reports in Orchard lab information system (LIS)
  • Manage patient lab results, providing accurate final reports to the ordering provider in a timely manner
  • Provide lab support to medical staff as needed, regarding specimen collection requirements, testing procedures, training, and other issues as needed
  • Accession and process lab specimens as outlined in lab procedures
  • Use Epic EMR for communication with providers and staff regarding lab results, specimen rejection, provider orders, etc.
  • Assist with other projects as directed by the lab supervisor, including but not limited to: validations, special reports, and reference (send-out) lab issues
  • Maintain all laboratory equipment with appropriate documentation.
  • Stock and monitor usage of laboratory supplies and reagents; to ensure adequate inventory of laboratory supplies is maintained
  • Perform all duties according to current CLIA and OSHA regulations
Requirements
Required License/Experience/Skills
  • Minimum of Associate in Applied Science, Medical Laboratory Technician program from an accredited institution w/ 3 years relevant clinical laboratory experience, Microbiology preferred
  • Medical Laboratory Technician ASCP/Board certified (board eligible considered)
Preferred License/Experience/Skills
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist from an accredited institution w/ 2 years relevant clinical laboratory experience, Microbiology preferred
  • Medical Laboratory Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist ASCP/Board certified (board eligible considered)
