Job summary

UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill is recruiting for a full-time clinical laboratory role. The position performs patient testing and related administrative tasks to support the Transfusion Medicine Service.

The role requires a Bachelor’s or higher in clinical/medical lab science or related field, with ASCP MT/MLS or ML classifications as applicable; licensure/certification accordingly, with varying experience requirements. Onsite work, 40 hours per week.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or associated degree in clinical/medical lab science, chemistry or biology.
  • Certification required based on degree: ASCP categorical or MT/MLS as applicable.
  • Experience: 2 years for some degree paths; no experience required for MT/MLS with appropriate cert.

Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate lab test results across CLIA testing levels.
  • Investigate equipment/test result/flow issues.
  • Work independently with laboratory testing requests.
  • Evaluate test requests for appropriateness and determine necessary testing.
  • Participate in teams and special projects and act as a technical resource.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing.

Summary:

Performs a variety of patient testing and administrative tasks in support of the clinical activities in the UNCHCS.

Responsibilities:
  • 1. Demonstrates advanced level competencies in producing accurate laboratory test results which includes all levels of CLIA outlined testing and problem solving.
  • 2. Maintains and investigates problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
  • 3. Demonstrates laboratory knowledge and skills while working independently.
  • 4. Evaluates laboratory testing requests for appropriateness and applies critical decision-making skills to reach conclusions about diagnostic testing needs.
  • 5. Participates on teams or perform special projects/assignments.
  • 6. Serves as a technical resource.
  • 7. Performs quality control, proficiency testing, and monitors accuracy and precision of laboratory testing.
  • 8. Prepares reagents and assists in the preparation of standard and control materials.
  • 9. Monitors levels of reagents and assists in maintaining supplies.
  • 10. Participates in teaching of multiple types of learners and training of new employees.
  • 11. Other duties as assigned.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

  • If Assoc Degree in Clinical Lab Science, Medical Lab Technician, Chemical Science or Biological Science – MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) certification required.
  • If Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Biological Science – ASCP categorical certification in specialty area required.
  • If Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical/Medical Lab Science – MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) certification required.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • If Assoc Degree in Clinical Lab Science, Medical Lab Technician, Chemical Science or Biological Science with MLT (ASCP) or MLT (AMT) – two (2) years of experience required.
  • If Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Biological Science with ASCP categorical certification in specialty area – two (2) years of experience required.
  • If Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical/Medical Lab Science with MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) certification – no experience required.
