Novant Health is seeking a Laboratory Scientist to join our dedicated team. You will perform complex testing, quality control, equipment calibration, and troubleshooting to ensure accurate results.

The role involves documentation, training staff, and supporting new instrument implementations in a fast-paced hospital lab. Applicants should have a 4-year degree in medical technology or related field, and ASCP/AMT certification.

Qualifications

  • NAACLS-accredited MT program preferred.
  • One year experience as laboratory scientist for BB, Flow, or Micro; three years for Core Sciences areas.
  • ASCP or AMT scientist certification required; Flow Cytometry acceptable if no other certs.
  • New graduates must obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Maintain certification through CMP/CCP as applicable.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory instrumentation.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate clearly.

Responsibilities

What We Offer

Join our laboratory team and make a direct impact on patient care! You’ll perform essential laboratory testing from specimen collection and processing through accurate reporting of results, while ensuring quality and reliability every step of the way. You’ll also help evaluate new techniques, troubleshoot equipment, and support the training and development of fellow team members.

What You’ll Do
  • Laboratory Testing: Perform complex laboratory testing, quality control, equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting to ensure accurate results.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain laboratory records, process requisitions, prepare reports, and follow regulatory and safety standards.
  • Training & Development: Maintain technical competency, train students and new staff, and support new instrument implementations.
  • Operations: Manage supplies and inventory, assist with process improvements, and evaluate new testing methods.
  • Teamwork & Support: Provide technical assistance, communicate effectively with healthcare teams, and support daily laboratory operations, including shift oversight when assigned.
  • Safety & Patient Experience: Follow safety protocols and promote professional, respectful, patient-centered service.
What We’re Looking For
  • Education: 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology or MT program Preferred.
    • If graduated before 1987, two-year certification is recognized as MT
  • Experience: One year experience as laboratory scientist for specialty areas (BB, Flow, and Micro). (Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred. Three years of experience for Core Sciences areas of the laboratory, preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Scientist Cert from ASCP or AMT (BB, C, H, MT/MLS, M, MB), required. Acceptable for Flow Cytometry only (if team member holds no other scientist certification): MDT(AMT) or SCYM(ASCP), required.
  • Additional Skills Required:
    • New graduates must obtain certification within 12-months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
    • All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
    • Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
    • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
    • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
    • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
    • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
    • Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
    • Ability to follow written protocols.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Additional skills preferred: Specialist certifications from accreditation agencies.
