Job summary

Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL, is seeking a Laboratory Support team member to assist with specimen intake, preparation, processing, and data entry. The role supports laboratory operations, ensures accurate tracking, and maintains equipment per policy.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED with two years of lab procedures experience, or an associate degree in chemistry or biological/medical laboratory sciences.

Responsibilities

• Performs multiple computer entry, inquiry, and receiving functions; transcription of laboratory orders and registration activities; communicates clearly with customers by phone and in person.
• Accessions and processes specimens according to procedures; prepares specimens for transport or delivery; recognizes and resolves specimen and equipment problems.
• Uses PPE as defined by the lab; labels and processes specimens properly; performs lab procedures efficiently with minimal supervision once trained; follows Rush-approved policies.
• Performs preventative maintenance and corrective action documentation for procedures and instrumentation.
• Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes and documents issues.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of problems and seeks help when needed.
• Disinfects the area at start and end of shift; notifies the appropriate person of specimens that must be drawn or collected again and documents notification.
• Delivers specimens to Rush laboratory locations or loads specimens on instrumentation; other duties may be defined by bench competencies.

Pay Range: $17.63 - $24.91 per hour

This position is responsible for supporting laboratory operations by accepting, preparing, and processing specimens; maintaining laboratory equipment; and ensuring accurate data entry and specimen tracking.

Calls critical results, documents to whom and that a “read back” was performed and within the expected time frame.
• Accessions and processes specimens according to the appropriate procedure prepare specimens accordingly for transport or delivery. Recognizes and resolves any specimen and equipment problems.
• Utilizes required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as defined by the lab area. Labels and processes specimens properly. Performs all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained. All testing must be done following Rush-approved Policies and Procedures.
• Performs required preventative maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation.
• Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents

action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all the time. Able to recognize when additional help is needed and seek out that help.

• Disinfects the area at the beginning and end of each shift; Accepts no inappropriate specimens. Notifies the appropriate person of specimens that must be drawn or collected again and documents the notification.
• Delivers specimens to RUSH laboratory locations, and/or loads specimens on instrumentation; Additional job duties will be defined by the laboratory's specific bench or assignment competencies.
