Responsibilities

Major Duties

• Perform a wide variety of complex ultrasound examinations of human patients to aid in the diagnosis of disease or injury.
• Explain the ultrasound examining process to the patient.
• Extend and/or modify the procedure to ensure full and accurate information.
• Select, set up, adjust, and operate ultrasound equipment.
• Train radiologists, physician assistants, students, and other personnel in ultrasound principles, procedures, capabilities, techniques, and equipment.
• Perform operator‑level maintenance and care of equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be credited. Transcripts and relevant documentation may be required.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that includes performing ultrasound procedures; providing ultrasound guidance for diagnostic procedures; and maintenance of ultrasound equipment.

Education: One and a half years of graduate‑level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Sonography or Radiology. Transcripts must be submitted.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Transcripts must be submitted.

Preferred: Certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) with experience in vascular (VT), obstetrics (OB), and/or breast (BR) exams.

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
