Job description

Medical Examiner Assistant I – Westfield (260004N3)

This position is for the overnight shift. The role involves assisting the Medical Examiner in all aspects of forensic autopsy, operating autopsy and mortuary equipment, and providing on-scene support.

Responsibilities

• Pass a full background check, including driving history inquiry.
• Operate OCME vehicles while complying with Massachusetts state driving statutes and regulations.
• Maintain a clean driving history as an OCME employee.
• Lift and move human remains up to 250 lbs. with assistance and up to 70 lbs. independently.
• Assist in all aspects of the forensic autopsy.
• Follow and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and become proficient in all autopsy skills.
• Assist in the preparation and evisceration of bodies.
• Assist in collecting tissue and fluid/ toxicology samples.
• Handle, label, and accurately enter specimens and evidentiary information into computer systems.
• Operate all autopsy and mortuary related equipment.
• Perform daily cleaning and disinfection of the autopsy suite and surgical instruments.
• Dispatch to and respond from scenes and medical facilities.
• Move, lift, prepare, position, photograph, and store remains on scene and at the medical examiner facility.
• Interact with private and public entities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree or certification from a technical school in a science or medical field.
• Valid Motor Vehicle License at the class level specific to assignment.
• Standard immunizations.
• Medical evaluation, passing the evaluation/test, and fit testing to wear a respirator.
