Job description

Winnebago County is seeking a forward-thinking, collaborative leader to serve as its next Medical Examiner. This is a unique opportunity to maximize the utilization of a recently constructed morgue facility that has the potential to compliment services needed by surrounding counties.

The position will collaborate to enhance services and use data analysis to identify trends and work with community partners on strategies to reduce preventable fatalities.

The ideal candidate brings a strong commitment to customer service, a data analysis mindset, and self-motivation to initiate partnerships and services. This role requires a leader with effective communication skills who can lead both daily operations and the long-range planning of the department.

Conducts medical and legal investigations into deaths occurring within Winnebago County in accordance with Wisconsin statutes, regulations, case law, and County ordinances. Provides leadership for the County’s death investigation system, ensuring accurate evaluation of cause and manner of death, effective coordination with partner agencies, and consistent application of investigative standards. Conducts analytical review of case patterns and trends to support public safety, health initiatives, and departmental decision‑making.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supports a compassionate, trauma informed culture for service delivery.
  • Builds and maintains effective working relationships with public safety, healthcare, behavioral health, forensic, court, and community partners.
  • Manages policy implementation, interagency coordination, and service improvement.
  • Prepares and presents various information to community stakeholders.
  • Participates and supports community groups focused on preserving life.
  • Leads the strategic use and expansion of services provided at the morgue facility.
  • Develops, mentors, and leads professional staff, fostering a high-performing and collaborative team environment.
