Job summary

New York Blood Center is seeking a part-time Medical Director for the Rhode Island Blood Center (RIBC). The role requires on-site presence 8 hours per week and provides medical directorship for laboratory operations, clinical guidance, and policy development.

The successful candidate will interact with staff, donor services and hospitals, supporting teaching and quality initiatives. Board-certified physicians with licensure in RI/MA/CT/NY and NYS CQ credentials will lead medical decision-making,

Qualifications

  • MD or DO with board certification in Clinical Pathology, Hematology or Pediatric Hematology plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine.
  • Must obtain medical licenses in RI, MA, CT and NY; NYS Laboratory Director CQ and NYS Technical Director CQ in Blood Collection – Comprehensive.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at RIBC.
  • Support teaching, quality improvement and continuous learning; develop and review policies.
  • Lead and mentor staff; respond to donor and hospital questions; ensure QA activities.
  • Be CLIA and NYS Laboratory Director for RIBC; cover donor criteria questions and front-line staff guidance.
  • Be on-site 8 hours per week at RIBC and collaborate with clinical staff and external hospitals.

Job description

Responsibilities

This position is part of the enterprise-wide Medical Office and is based at RIBC. The position is part-time; the holder of this position is required to spend 8 hours per week on-site at RIBC. This role is responsible for providing medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at RIBC, as well as providing support and guidance to collections staff, other internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals. The position is expected to support teaching, quality improvement and continuous learning. Finally, the position supports management in making informed medical decisions and develops and reviews technical and medical policies.

  • Serves as the CLIA and New York State Laboratory Director and New York State Technical Director for RIBC.
  • Covers RIBC phone call (remote) for a week at a time, as assigned, up to 26 weeks per year.
  • Provide part-time coverage on donor criteria questions for RIBC. Makes decisions per medical criteria and replies to donor and hospital questions.
  • Reviews and provides critical input regarding procedures, job aids, work instructions and medical criteria for use by front line staff.
  • Participates (on a part-time basis) teaching activities, including occasionally (1-2x per year) presenting on NYBCe webinar series, including Essentials of Transfusion Medicine, Lab Week, and Beyond Essentials.
  • Supports the planning development of annual Essentials of Blood Banking (EBB) on-site learning.
  • Develop close relationships with clinical staff and front-line staff and provide expert consultation internally within RIBC and NYBCe and externally to hospitals.
  • Assure participation in quality assurance activities and high performance of assigned program and services.
Qualifications

Education:

M.D. or D.O. Must have board certification in Clinical Pathology, Hematology, or Pediatric Hematology plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, and ability to obtain:

  • Medical Licenses in: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York
  • NY State Laboratory Director Certificate of Qualification (CQ);
  • NY State Technical Director CQ in the Blood Bank Collection – Comprehensive category.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year experience in clinical/laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond transfusion medicine fellowship training medicine. Such experience should include medical supervision of transfusion services and/or blood donor activities.

Professional Licences:

  • Currently have, or ability to obtain with 6 months of employment (1) a full license to practice medicine in the following states: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York; (2) NYS Laboratory Director CQ; (3) NYS Technical Director CQ in Blood Collection – Comprehensive.
  • Must have 1 available CLIA license slot for CLIA-licensed laboratories associated with NYBCe.

On-Site Requirement:

  • Required to be on-site at RIBC for 8 hours/week.

Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of state and federal regulations.
