Qualifications

Our client is seeking an experienced and compassionate Medical Director Veterinarian to join a high-quality, AAHA-accredited small animal veterinary practice in Westchester County, New York.

This is an exciting opportunity for a veterinarian seeking a clinical leadership role while continuing to provide hands-on patient care.

The successful candidate will help lead medical standards, mentor associate veterinarians, develop the clinical team and drive continuous improvement across the hospital.

The Role:

As Medical Director Veterinarian, you will be the clinical leader and champion of medical excellence within the practice.

You will combine hands-on small animal veterinary medicine with veterinary leadership, mentorship, team development, clinical oversight and operational collaboration.

Working closely with the Practice Manager, you will help create a culture focused on exceptional patient care, evidence-based veterinary medicine, client service, professional development and team engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead and Mentor the Veterinary Team
  • Provide clinical leadership, coaching and mentorship to associate veterinarians.
  • Conduct regular performance and professional development discussions.
  • Support individual veterinarian career goals and clinical development.
  • Promote collaboration, engagement, retention and a positive veterinary team culture.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and evidence-based veterinary medicine.
Champion Medical Excellence
  • Establish and maintain high standards for clinical quality and patient care.
  • Serve as a role model for exceptional veterinary medicine and client service.
  • Continue practicing as a hands-on small animal veterinarian while serving as Medical Director.
  • Review and improve clinical protocols, workflows and medical standards.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce new services and enhance patient outcomes.
  • Support the delivery of high-quality preventative, diagnostic, surgical and urgent care.
Support Hospital Performance
  • Partner with the Practice Manager on annual operational and business planning.
  • Contribute to hospital financial performance and key business objectives.
  • Promote appropriate resource utilisation and clinical efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable veterinary, medical, controlled-substance and DEA regulations.
  • Help balance exceptional medicine with effective hospital operations.
Develop a Culture of Learning
  • Lead regular doctor meetings focused on medical standards, best practices and new services.
  • Support veterinary externships, mentorship programmes and professional development.
  • Encourage recruitment and development of talented veterinarians.
  • Promote continuing education and lifelong learning.
  • Help develop future veterinary leaders within the practice.
Community & Professional Engagement
  • Serve as a professional ambassador for the hospital and its veterinary mission.
  • Build relationships with local schools, universities, veterinary programmes and community organisations.
  • Participate in educational and community events.
  • Help strengthen the practice's reputation within the local veterinary community.
What You'll Bring:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited veterinary school.
  • A current New York veterinary license in good standing, or eligibility to obtain one.
  • At least 2 years of clinical veterinary experience, ideally in small animal practice.
  • Previous leadership, mentoring or management experience is advantageous.
  • A genuine interest in veterinary medical leadership and team development.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to build strong relationships with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, support staff and clients.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn, veterinary practice operations and financial management.
  • Competence with standard computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
  • Enthusiasm for a progressive, growth-oriented veterinary environment.
Salary & Benefits:

The successful candidate will receive a $150,000-$180,000 base salary, alongside opportunities for professional development and access to broader organisational resources.
