Children's Colorado is seeking a Senior Medical Coder to join the Health Information Management team in Aurora. This PRN role involves assigning ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT codes using encoding software, in line with AMA and CMS guidelines to ensure compliant, optimal reimbursement.

The position requires five years of hospital coding experience, a HS diploma, and professional certifications (CCS, CPC, CPC-H, COC, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT). Remote work is available as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Five (5) years of medical hospital coding and charging experience.
  • Certifications required: CCS, CPC, CPC-H, COC, CCS-P, RHIA, RHIT.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews medical records to determine appropriate facility and/or provider-based diagnosis and procedure codes, including inpatient coding as required.
  • Performs associate and intermediate level coding as needed.
  • Analyses and resolves moderately complex data integrity issues; abstracts pertinent patient information from the EHR.
  • Contributes to coding compliance and supports professional coding standards.
  • Collaborates with CDI for documentation improvement and accurate DRG assignment.
  • Utilizes online coding software, applies modifiers, and references tools for day-to-day coding accuracy.
  • Seeks documentation clarification to ensure accurate billing for facility and/or professional services.

Job Overview

The Medical Coder Senior provides the highest expert coding support within the Health Information Management (HIM) department. This role is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, ICD-10 PCS procedure codes, and CPT procedure codes utilizing encoding software and online reference tools. All coding is performed in strict accordance with American Medical Association (AMA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines and regulations to ensure compliance and optimal reimbursement.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Reviews medical records to determine all appropriate facility and/or provider-based diagnosis and procedure code(s). The scope of work is all encompassing to the highest complexity up to Inpatient including both concurrent and discharge coding as required.
  • Performs associate and intermediate level coding as required.
  • Analyses, researches and corrects moderately complex data integrity issues. Abstracts and collects pertinent patient information housed in the EHR.
  • Contributes to coding compliance and departmental objectives by continuously developing coding abilities and performing duties in harmony with established professional coding standards.
  • Collaborates with the CDI for documentation improvement and to ensure accurate DRG assignment.
  • Efficiency utilizes online coding software for accuracy including analyzing coding edits and applies any applicable modifiers, and resource coding reference tools to perform day-to-day functions
  • Maintains accuracy for coding and productivity standards. Adheres to standard ethical coding guidelines established by professional health information management associations.
  • Seeks documentation clarification from healthcare providers or other designated resources to ensure accurate and complete coding including accuracy in billing for facility and/or professional services.

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Hourly Range: $26.47 to $39.71
