Job summary

UnitedHealth Group is seeking an Emergency Department Coder to remotely support coding for ED services across the United States. You will apply ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS codes and verify documentation to ensure accurate charge capture and APC impacts are properly addressed.

The role requires 1+ year of ED coding experience, AHIMA/AAPC certification, and familiarity with NCCI/MUE basics. Telecommuting is supported under policy and benefits apply based on eligibility.

Codes Emergency Department services

Confirms documentation supports code selection and resolves facility edits and Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) impacts

Applies International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT)/Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes and supports charge capture reconciliation and late charges

Meets established quality and productivity standards in a production environment

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma

Required Certifications: American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) credential (Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H))

1+ years of ED coding experience

1+ years of ICD-10 experience

Intermediate familiarity with National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI)/Medically Unlikely Edits (MUE) basics and facility modifier awareness

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with EHR systems

Intermediate level of Microsoft Excel

The hourly pay for this role will range from $20.00 to $36.00 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
