Job summary

Missouridelta in Sikeston, MO is seeking a Certified Medical Coder to join our hospital coding team, handling coding across Radiology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, Lab, and Infusion Center. You will apply ICD-9-CM/ICD-10 codes and support medical necessity decisions while ensuring accuracy.

You will review charts, contact physicians for missing information, and assist in training new staff and remote coders. Certification and hospital experience are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Past experience coding with ICD-9-CM in a hospital setting is required.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 coding system, medical terminology, pathology, and anatomy/physiology is an asset.
  • Certification in coding (e.g., CPC) is required or in progress.

Responsibilities

  • Code using CPT/ICD codes for various departments including Radiology, Cardiology, OB/GYN, and Laboratory.
  • Review charts to determine reason for errors and correct the codes.
  • Contact physicians for missing orders or data regarding medical necessity.
  • Assist in training new personnel and remote coders.
  • Participate in educational programs and maintain active AAPC status.
  • Handle emergencies coding with SymMetrics and print department logs as needed.

Job Functions
  • Code the following work lists:
    • Radiology
    • Cardiology
    • Respiratory/Sleep Labs
    • Physical Therapy
    • Infusion Center
    • Recurring Labs
    • All Un‑coded Outpatient records
    • Laboratory
    • All Un‑coded Records
  • Code using CPT codes for procedures in orthopedics and non‑stress tests in OB/GYN.
  • Review charts in the EBEW lists to determine the reason for the error and correct the error.
  • Review patient charts regarding medical necessity forwarded from Patient Accounts and document correct codes.
  • Contact physicians regarding missing orders or diagnoses.
  • Contact the physician’s offices to request additional information regarding a medical necessity error.
  • Assist in training new personnel in coding.
  • Assist in the training of remote coders.
  • Participate in educational programs and in‑services.
  • Retain active status with AAPC.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Work with SymMetrics for emergency department coding.
  • Print emergency department log for the previous day.
  • Any other duties assigned (e.g., Patient Accounts/Billing).
Qualifications
Education

High School Graduate. Additional certification in the coding field required.

Experience

Past experience coding with ICD‑9‑CM coding system, preferably in a hospital setting, is required. Knowledge of the ICD‑10 coding system, medical terminology, pathology, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology is an asset.

  • Standing: Minimal.
  • Sitting: Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods while focusing on proper coding of medical diagnoses.
  • Walking: Minimal.
  • Lifting: Must be able to lift light loads such as stacks of medical records (25 pounds).
Visual

Must have the ability to see and read medical records, coding books, computer screens, computer‑generated reports, and all other tools used in the performance of the job.

Hearing

Must have the ability to receive and understand telephone calls, e.g., doctors, insurance companies, etc.

Speaking

Must be able to speak clearly and verbally communicate with doctors, insurance companies, etc.
