Job summary

Join EMSA seeks a qualified Medical Coder for ambulance services. You will assign ICD-10/HCPCS codes based on clinical documentation and guidelines, review modifiers, and monitor queues to ensure timely processing and accuracy of patient demographics and insurance data.

You will maintain confidentiality, follow HIPAA rules, and stay current with industry standards and revenue cycle KPIs while collaborating with the team to drive process improvements and uphold our patient-centered, compliant

Qualifications

  • Must have Medical Coding Certification through AAPC or AHIMA.
  • Working knowledge of medical billing and medical terminology.
  • HIPAA knowledge and privacy practices.
  • Type at least 35 words per minute and demonstrate 10-key proficiency.
  • Excellent time management with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and with a group; maintain good working relationships.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must successfully pass a background check and drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 and HCPCS coding for ambulance services based on clinical documentation and guidelines.
  • Review modifiers to ensure correct origin/destination for ambulance encounters.
  • Monitor work queues to ensure timely record processing and defined productivity.
  • Verify patient demographics and insurance information for accuracy.
  • Ensure required signatures are obtained prior to claim submission.
  • Maintain knowledge of insurance and special handling for ambulance coding.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with privacy rules.
  • Adhere to official coding guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Stay current with industry standards and align coding practices accordingly.
  • Understand revenue cycle KPIs and contribute to team KPIs.
  • Collaborate with team to identify trends and process improvements.
  • Conduct oneself professionally in line with EMSA values.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and integrity expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Assign accurate ICD-10 and HCPCS according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for ambulance services providers.
  • Reviews modifiers to ensure location for origin and destination are correct.
  • Monitor assigned work queues to ensure all records are processed in a timely manner, while ensuring defined productivity is met.
  • Monitor the accuracy of patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Validate that required signatures are in place prior to claim submission.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of insurance and/or special handling requirements as they pertain to coding for ambulance services.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient care information to ensure patient rights are protected.
  • Ensure all work adheres to official coding guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry standards and ensure organizational coding practices align.
  • Understand revenue cycle key performance indicators and work to achieve the KPIs of the team.
  • Maintain knowledge of current industry standards and organizational practices and work in a manner that supports a patient centered, team focused, and fiscally responsible organization.
  • Communicate with other team members and leaders on identified trends and process improvement opportunities.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner that reflects the mission, vision, and values of EMSA.
  • Adherent to all organizational policies and work with the highest level of integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
