The Medical Care Transportation Technician - EMT position is based at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA, within VHA Veterans Transportation Services.
The role requires EMT license, BLS certification, a valid state driver’s license, English proficiency, and ability to meet selective placement factors; duties include emergency patient care, vehicle operation, and coordination with dispatchers.
The Medical Care Transportation Technician - EMT position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Ambulance Service, in various VA Medical Center (VAMC) locations with an emergency room, acute care or urgent care clinic, or other similar departments performing basic life support procedures. This position is located at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/15/2026.
There is an English Language Proficiency Requirement: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to perform the duties of this position.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - There are THREE (3) Selective Placement Factors (SPF) that have been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.-

In addition to the English Language Proficiency, Current and Valid State Driver's License Requirement and the Four (4) Selective Placement Factors listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must also meet one of the following:
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The EMT's work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. EMTs may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/exercises. On a regular and recurring basis, employee is exposed to infection and contagious diseases, is required to work in all types of weather and traffic conditions and faces risks and discomforts at the scene of accidents, to include the possibility of noxious fumes, dangerous substances, cuts, bruises, etc., requiring the EMT to comply with special safety and health precautions and/or to use protective gear. Work may also expose the EMT to patients who are intoxicated, under the influence of drugs or mentally unstable resulting in belligerent and sometimes violent behavior.
