Job summary

Virginia Cancer Specialists in Fairfax, Virginia is seeking a Full Time Medical Assistant/Transfusion Coordinator for our Northern Virginia offices. This onsite role supports physicians and clinicians with patient care, coordinates transfusion services, and helps manage scheduling and documentation.

Ideal candidates have at least three years of MA or nursing assistant experience, are certified or certifiable, and hold current BCLS certification; phlebotomy experience is a plus.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent; MA program certificate preferred.
  • Minimum three years' experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant.
  • Current BCLS certification required; CMA preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and schedule blood transfusion services for all practice locations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the practice, local hospitals, and external blood suppliers to ensure seamless transfusion coordination.
  • Verify completion of all pre-transfusion requirements, including provider orders, transfusion type and screen.
  • Prepare and submit transfusion-related documentation for provider review, approval, and signature.
  • Communicate transfusion appointment dates, times, and instructions to patients, and ensure all required documentation is forwarded to the hospital-based outpatient infusion clinic.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and infusion clinics to facilitate timely patient care.
  • Provide planning, coordination, and oversight of transfusion scheduling and related administrative processes.
  • Identify, document, and communicate transfusion coordination issues, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to standardized procedures for transfusion order verification and processing.
  • Schedule transfusions as directed by physicians and registered nurses.
  • Assist with disability, FMLA, and other medical documentation requests.
  • Perform clerical duties and maintain documentation in accordance with policies and regulatory requirements.

Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, a leader in Cancer care, is seeking a Full Time Medical Assistant/Transfusion Coordinator for our Northern Virginia offices. Under direct supervision, assists physicians and clinicians with patient care duties in a clinical environment. Promotes efficient patient flow and patient care, i.e. exams, and procedures. Performs clinic support tasks including miscellaneous clerical tasks, answering phones, and maintaining physicians schedule. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

  • Identify, document, and communicate transfusion coordination issues, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure adherence to standardized procedures for transfusion order verification and processing.
  • Schedule transfusions as directed by physicians and registered nurses.
  • Respond to patient telephone inquiries and direct clinical concerns to the appropriate physician or nurse.
  • Notify providers of patient appointment reschedules, cancellations, and no-shows.
  • Assist with disability, FMLA, and other medical documentation requests.
  • Perform a variety of administrative and clerical duties, including data entry, document preparation, filing, faxing, chart preparation, reception support, and other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or physician.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school graduate or equivalent. Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred. Minimum three years' experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant. Phlebotomy experience preferred. Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required. Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
