Job summary

CMU Health is seeking a Medical Assistant to support the Surgery department with clinical and administrative duties. You will prepare patients, assist during examinations and procedures, and manage room readiness and supplies.

The role emphasizes patient-centered care and adherence to safety standards in a fast-paced clinic. Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program, with an associate degree preferred.

  • Reinforce patient education with AVS and pre/post-operative instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain examination rooms and equipment per safety standards.
  • Support scheduling, authorizations, referrals, and diagnostic testing.

Medical Assistant | Surgery (Full Time)
Department: Surgery

The Medical Assistant (MA) supports the delivery of patient-centered care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician. This position performs clinical and administrative duties to assist providers, support efficient clinic operations, and deliver safe, high-quality patient care within the Department of Surgery.

What You’ll Do
  • Clinical Patient Care
  • Prepare patients for examinations and minor procedures by obtaining and documenting vital signs, medical histories, medications, allergies, and other pertinent clinical information.
  • Assist providers during surgical consultations, examinations, office procedures, and treatments.
  • Perform point-of-care testing and administer medications and injections in accordance with established protocols and documented competencies.
  • Reinforce patient education by reviewing After Visit Summaries (AVS), pre-operative and post-operative instructions, wound care, and provider-directed care plans.
  • Clinical Operations
  • Prepare, clean, stock, and maintain examination and procedure rooms, clinical equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with infection prevention and safety standards.
  • Perform quality control procedures and support laboratory and diagnostic testing as assigned.
  • Assist with surgery scheduling, prior authorizations, referrals, and coordination of diagnostic testing, as assigned.
  • Support efficient clinic operations by collaborating with providers and team members to maintain patient flow and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Bring
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Associate degree in medical assistingis preferred
Certification
  • Certified or Registered Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
Experience
  • One (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant in an ambulatory care setting
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in surgical scheduling, healthcare scheduling, or a related healthcare setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, insurance verification, prior authorizations, and electronic medical records (EMR) preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced clinical environment
  • Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems
  • Commitment to patient-centered care, safety, and confidentiality.
