POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant in the OB/GYN department assists clinicians and nursing staff in providing medical care and evaluating patient conditions. The role involves vital sign taking, patient intake, coordinating referrals, communicating test results, managing the electronic medical record, administering medications as directed, and maintaining a clean, functional clinical environment.

CORE FUNCTIONS
  1. Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms and other necessary measurements and documenting chief complaint; reports condition changes to the clinician.
  2. Assists providers with exams and minor in‑office procedures, including blood pressure, respiration and pulse, temperature, phlebotomy, ear irrigation, and EKGs; acts as chaperone as needed; uses universal precautions and PPE; prioritizes patient flow.
  3. Coordinates and manages patient care including pre‑certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling of clinic, hospital and ancillary treatments/tests; communicates test results to patients; may administer medications per policy.
  4. Provides clerical support: completes medical records, labs, authorizations, X‑Rays, hospital records; supplies billing information timely.
  5. Maintains a clean, functional environment: disinfects equipment, exam rooms, storage areas; follows sterilization and OSHA guidelines; performs basic equipment maintenance.
  6. Orders supplies and medications, manages expiring items and recalls.
  7. Develops and maintains effective communication with external and internal customers; exemplifies service orientation and team concept.
  8. Completes onboarding/orientation activities, including simulation training.
  9. Works under direct supervision of providers, interacts with all staff levels, physicians, patients, families, external contacts, and physician’s offices; manages data from multiple sources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED. Completion of an approved medical assistant training program per state regulations. Active Medical Assistant certification (RMA, CMA, CCMA, NCMA, etc.) and BLS certification required. Strong computer skills, including medical software, and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple changing priorities effectively and in an organized fashion.

Employees working in behavioral health settings for children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card and an Arizona Criminal History Affidavit upon hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with office medical procedures and treatments, insurance, managed care operations, EMR and scheduling software. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
