Job summary

Hugh Chatham Health in Elkin, NC seeks an experienced Medical Assistant for its Gastroenterology department. The role supports patient rooming, labs, med administration, and coordination of care under physician supervision.

Must have MA certification and at least two years of clinical MA experience with BLS. The position is full-time, 36 hours per week, with hours Mon-Thu 8a-5p and Fri 8a-1p.

Qualifications

  • Two years of Medical Assistant experience in a clinical setting.
  • Current BLS certification (AHA).
  • Ability to perform routine and complex MA tasks with competency.
  • Knowledge of patient safety and privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice and facility policies.
  • Performs rooming tasks: vital signs, med reconciliation, med history, health maintenance and screenings.
  • Assists providers with procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab duties including venipuncture, specimen handling, POCT and CLIA-waived tests.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely per medication rights.
  • Handles refills, authorizations, scheduling, referrals as needed.
  • Maintains clean work environment and stocked supplies.
  • May assist with training new teammates and participate in committees.

Major Responsibilities
  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking. Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order. Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately. Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
  • May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental standards.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program required
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas.
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Demonstrates professional practice advancement through professional governance, safety coach, super-user, vaccine coordinator, SPICE or OSHA/IP certificate holder for unit
  • Achieves 6 points from the list of additional market responsibilities
Current Medical Assistant certification from one of the following is required
  • CMA from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • CCMA from National Health career Association (NHA)
  • NCMA from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • RMA from American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • RMA from American Allied Health
  • NCMSMA from National Healthcare Worker’s Association (NHCWA)
  • NRCMA from National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • NRMA from National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA)
Experience
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
  • Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available.
  • Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case- by -case basis.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
  • Will be exposed to the following hazards on a frequent basis: mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids. Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
