Job summary

Overview

Provides direct and indirect patient care activities and carries out provider orders as appropriate. The Medical Assistant (MA) assists fellow employees in delivering high-quality, personalized patient care and maintains a positive working relationship with the health care team. Maintains and upholds established patient care, operational expectations, and employee policies in alignment with the clinic operational leadership teams. Supports the Gonzaba coordinated care model by working with other GMG providers and support departments to ensure a patient-centered approach at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

General Requirements

All duties performed will be done accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Furthers patient care by communicating effectively with providers, coordinating tests, procedures, surgeries, hospitalizations and providing patients with community resources as needed.
  • Participates in educational programs as needed.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical competencies according to Gonzaba Medical Group policy.
  • Ensures customer service is always maintained at the highest level.
  • May need to travel to support patient care at another GMG location.
  • At times the MA will need to float to other pods (in the clinic or another location); during these times all pod responsibilities should be completed including triage, discharge, phone notes, refills, call confirmations, etc.
  • Exercise tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, visitors, providers, and co-workers.
  • Must adhere to customer service expectations including in-person and virtual communication (via telephone or telehealth).
  • Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Provides patient care in a clinic setting within the scope of training received from Medical Assistant programs, including obtaining vital signs, applying monitoring devices, venipuncture, glucose monitoring, or hemoccult slide development.
  • Reports and accurately documents clinical findings to the provider in charge.
  • Performs patient discharge and participates in patient education using provider guidelines and/or handouts; ensures patient understanding and thorough documentation.
  • Assists in providing quality health care by accessing the electronic medical record to obtain/provide pertinent information; reports appropriate information to the provider and documents appropriately.
  • Remains aligned with departmental goals including RMH visits, HEDIS measures, and providing quality care using available tools and reports to meet organizational goals.
  • Maintains assigned work area with supplies and equipment; cleans, stocks, and maintains exam rooms, procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment.
  • Follows universal precautions for patients, procedures, handling specimens, cleaning and disinfecting instruments and exam rooms as taught and retrained through annual compliance training.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Transports patients safely between positions (sitting, standing, lying down) and assists to the bathroom, into/out of wheelchairs, and when pushing/pulling wheelchairs.
  • Collaborates with PODs, clinical support staff and providers on duties such as RMH/HEDIS reports, phone notes, Rx refill requests, rescheduling, chart prep, and form completion as needed.
  • Supports clinic leadership with All Hands-on Deck coordination of patients as needed.
  • Communicates with clinic leadership upon completion of assigned duties; prioritizes patient safety and fall prevention.
  • Flexibility to work at diverse locations and travel as needed.
Education and Training
  • Minimum high school education or equivalent. Certificate from an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent medical training. CPR certification with AED (current).
  • National certification as a Registered or Certified Medical Assistant is required for initial and continued employment at Gonzaba Medical Group; credential must be maintained.
  • National certification must be issued by AAMA (CMA), ARMA (RMA), NAHP (NRCMA), or other GMG-approved association.
Experience

Experience in a clinic, doctor’s office or hospital with a minimum of one year preferred.

Other Requirements
  • Computer proficiency in EMR systems; knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, Internet, and database software.
Work Environment

Clinic environment with exposure to typical clinical hazards and substances.

Mental / Physical Requirements

Requires manual dexterity; capable of sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching, bending, walking, and lifting up to 40 lbs. Close vision and ability to adjust focus; ability to work efficiently under pressure.
