Job summary

Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute in Kissimmee, FL is seeking a Lab Assistant - CMA to support specimen collection, testing and patient flow under the Office Manager. You will perform in-house analyses, maintain logs, and ensure quality control while handling patient specimens and data entry in ONCO EMR.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, CMA certification from an approved board, and BLS certification with at least six months of Medical Assistant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.

  • Input in ONCO EMR and maintain daily paperwork and lab logs.
  • Perform in-house lab testing and process results for charting.

Summary

Under direct supervision of the Office Manager, the Lab Assistant -CMA is responsible for the collecting, processing and testing of specimens from patients, documenting results according to established procedures. Performs specimen analysis, instrument maintenance, and quality control procedures as indicated. Follows quality assurance and safety policies and procedures. Assists with patient flow as needed. Properly identifies patient, draws blood samples, and sends to laboratory for analysis. Maintains collection areas and equipment and performs record-keeping duties. Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures and/or scientific methods and adheres to quality guidelines. Responsible for rooming patients, taking vitals, completing patient assessments, and assisting in medical procedures as required.

PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collects appropriate specimens from patients as ordered.
  • Sends specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in-house.
  • Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program, including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records, and checklists.
  • Charts patient results in a timely manner.
  • Update and file all daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs.
  • Performs lab testing for in-house tests.
  • Processes in-house and incoming results for charting.
  • Uses equipment effectively, skillfully and efficiently.
  • Maintains equipment and work area as directed.
  • Performs specimen analysis of all chemistry, hematology, immunology specimens as directed.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before using in patient testing.
  • Perform patient assessment for chief complaint, medication reconciliation, and pertinent history. input in ONCO EMR.
  • Efficiently perform blood draws and follow all lab procedures for specimen handling and processing.
  • Obtain vital signs, PHQ9 and Pain scores, ensure accurate documentation in the EMR.
  • Efficiently room patients according to office procedures.
  • Complies with regulatory agency standards.
  • Prep blood and bone marrow slides.
  • Assist with medical procedures as required.
  • Must take the required number of CEUs annually to meet C.O.L.A. requirements.
  • Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patients’ rights, safety, billing, and collections.
  • Adhere to all company and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Always maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Additional tasks as needed to support team.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

High School diploma or GED

BLS required upon hire or must be obtained within 30 days of employment (FCS will provide BLS course within the first 30 days).

  • Valid Medical Assistant Certification Required from one of these 5 approved boards: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) from the National Health career Association (NHA)
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologist (AMT)
  • The National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) for Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA)
  • Nationally Certified Medical Assistant - RMA(AAH) from American Allied Health Medical Assistant Certification (MAC)

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of six months of active experience in a Medical Assistant role within the practice.
