Job summary

Sea Mar Community Health Centers in Mount Vernon is seeking a certified Medical Assistant to support the Mount Vernon Medical Clinic and travel to the Skagit Valley Women’s Clinic. The MA will help manage patient flow and ensure timely, quality care under the supervision of a provider.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Ensure patient flow and quality care by reviewing records and documenting measures in the EHR.

  • Assist with vaccines and injections per provider orders.

Position Summary

On-call Medical Assistant position available for our Mount Vernon Medical Clinic. This position will also travel to the Skagit Valley Women’s Clinic. Ideal candidates will have proven excellent customer service skills, demonstrate an enthusiastic professional demeanor, and excel at multitasking. Medical Assistants are an integral part of the care team, ensuring patient flow and providing quality patient care in a safe and timely manner.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • The MA is responsible for ensuring that all patient clinical measures are addressed and will do so by thorough EHR reviews, tracking, and documenting all clinical measures/outcomes for patients in EHR. This includes seeing 18/21 patients per day with an assigned provider and reaching out to patients who have care gaps.
  • Coordinate and process all patient referrals, both internal and external. In managing referrals, the MA works closely with Referral Coordinators when a patient referral is handled by them as per established protocols.
  • Be team‑oriented and collaborate with all care team members to provide the best outcomes for patients and the organization based on the Patient‑Centered Medical Home model of care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care to patients served.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
  • Assist providers in serving an average of 18/21 patients per day (based on provider type).
  • Identify and categorize each patient’s age‑specific grouping of needs and clinical measures such as those for infant, adolescent, adult or geriatric patients.
  • Identify the patient’s clinical needs according to diagnosis and follow clinical guidelines per protocol.
  • Prepare for the Pre‑Huddle and participate in the Care Team Huddle to ensure collection of all relevant clinic forms, quality measures, lab and x‑ray reports, and review of the Patient Manager and medication confirmation process.
  • Prepare the patient for their visit with the Care Team. The MA obtains patient subjective information and vital signs.
  • Ensure documentation of all relevant information, care provided, and processes engaged in, in accordance with Sea Mar protocol.
  • Prepare exam and procedure rooms by stocking with appropriate supplies and disinfecting per established protocol.
  • Maintain professional standards and follow the treatment policies and procedures of the organization. This includes administration of IM, SubQ and intradermal injections, as well as oral, rectal, inhaled medication as ordered by the provider.
  • Document medication administration according to protocol.
  • Maintain and reconcile medication and immunization data/lists.
  • Respect the cultural diversity of Sea Mar patients and staff.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and in‑service training.
  • Ensure medication storage, maintenance, dispensing, and waste logs are maintained per Sea Mar policies and procedures. Any area of non‑compliance should be reported immediately to the supervisor/manager.
  • Ensure quality controls are performed and documented as required; report non‑compliance immediately to the supervisor/manager.
  • Assist providers with GYN exams, I & D’s, and other minor procedures.
  • Demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
  • Report any abnormal vital signs to the provider immediately.
  • Utilize aseptic (sterile) technique.
  • Assist with ordering of department supplies.
  • Assist Nursing/MA Supervisors with streamlining and implementing pod/flow systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure that all medical, nursing, health & safety and personnel policies and procedures are followed and implemented.
  • Complete all point‑of‑care referrals for patients including specialty care, care coordination and other services. Inform patients regarding specialty referrals, providing required information to specialist’s offices for point‑of‑care referral processing, including labs, EHR notes, etc.
  • Assist with obtaining laboratory tests and results.
  • Assist with obtaining patient notes and records from hospitals and other provider offices.
  • Maintain positive collaborative working relationships with co‑workers, specialists and community organizations.
  • Utilize AIDET to ensure excellent customer service at each patient visit, including escorting each patient to and from the treatment rooms.
  • Incoming clinical phone calls will be sent to the MA Supervisor, Nurse Supervisor or Nurse Manager. Calls referred to you will be resolved in one business day.
  • Communicate provider delays and patient flow delays to the front desk staff, direct supervisor and the patient professionally and appropriately.
  • Manage bio‑hazardous waste properly.
  • Assist with pharmacy requests.
  • Ensure infection control and standard precautions are followed per Sea Mar policy.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the nursing parameters of the Electronic Health Record and Practice Management Application programs.
  • Comply with regulatory requirements including Joint Commission, NPSG, Department of Health, Clinical Quality Measures, PCMH, QI and other contractual obligations.
  • If working as a scribe, demonstrate scribe proficiency.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with all HIPAA regulations at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Personnel and Performance Metrics
  • Adhere to schedule and be prepared to provide services by 8 a.m. each day.
  • Provide provider services using AIDET skills at all times.
  • Complete quality care gaps for 100% of patients treated.
  • Serve a minimum of ten patients a day.
  • Strongly support Follow My Health enrollment.
  • Close chart notes within 24 hours of service.
  • Support an average of 21 patient visits a day for a full day’s schedule per MD provider and an average of 18 patient visits per day for an ARNP/PA provider.
Education and/or Requirements
  • Must have Washington State Medical Assistant Certificate.
  • Minimum one year experience as an MA or Assistant preferred in Family Medicine.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR required and maintained throughout employment.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred, not required.
