Job summary

Franklin Primary Health Center is seeking a Medical Assistant who will support patient care by recording vitals, assisting clinicians, and maintaining patient records with confidentiality. The role also involves front desk functions, lab support, and rotating to different departments as needed, under supervision of the Unit Supervisor or Nurse Manager.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or MA program completion and 1+ years in a medical setting with CPT coding and billing

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED. Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program or equivalent.
  • One or more years of medical setting experience with knowledge of medical terminology, CPT coding, and Medicaid/Medicare billing.

Responsibilities

  • Record vital signs, weights, and chief complaints; perform nursing tasks under supervision.
  • Assist patients in exam rooms and support procedures and treatments.
  • Maintain confidentiality and proper charting; ensure lab results are linked to patient records.
  • Rotate to front desk, X-ray, lab and other areas as needed by supervisor.
  • Maintain supplies and cleanliness of exam rooms and reception area.
  • Adhere to HIPAA/privacy rules and annual compliance training.

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant, under the supervision of the Unit Supervisor or Nurse Manager, provides a variety of medical and clerical duties associated with patient care. The Medical Assistant maintains a pleasant, courteous, and cooperative manner with patients, visitors, and Center personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains confidentiality at all times.
  • Works up patients and records vital signs, weights, and chief complaints on progress notes at each visit.
  • Ensures all laboratory results are on charts before providing the chart to the healthcare provider.
  • Records the patient’s name and chart number on all pages in the medical record.
  • Assists patients in exam rooms. Assists nurses and/or providers with procedures and treatments.
  • Assists nurses with mailing correspondence to patients regarding abnormal laboratory results and missed appointments and documents actions in the patient’s medical record.
  • Maintains and organizes supplies in the supply room. Keeps exam rooms stocked and organized at all times.
  • Covers laboratory personnel when the Lab Technician is out.
  • Rotates to other units and departments, including the front desk, X-ray, laboratory, and other areas, when deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor or Director of Nursing.
  • Maintains up-to-date CPR certification and submits a copy of the CPR card to the Human Resources Department.
  • Participates in nurse training sessions and maintains CEUs as required by the State Nurses Licensure Board.
  • Performs any other duties deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor and/or Nurse Manager.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Pediatrics:

  • Assists with ear irrigations, eye screenings, and hearing screenings.

OB/GYN:

  • Sterilizes surgical instruments.
  • Logs all urine results on charts.
  • Issues family planning supplies and assists with completing family planning forms.

General:

  • Maintains the reception area in a neat and orderly condition at all times.
  • Maintains prompt arrival and regular attendance at work.
  • Sorts all office mail and is responsible for incoming and outgoing mail distribution.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Performance will be evaluated by the Nurse Manager or designee annually, wherein an overall satisfactory rating is considered the minimum acceptable level of performance.

PRIVACY RULE COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Adheres to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA Privacy Rule) policies and procedures.
  • Must successfully complete Privacy Rule compliance training annually or as revisions are made to the policies and procedures.
  • Must comply with Privacy Rule guidelines by protecting FPHC patients’ medical privacy.
  • Must appropriately maintain patient information in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Must provide appropriate security of FPHC patient records.
HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

The health and safety requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must adhere to safety regulations, personnel policies, and procedures.
  • Safety and Hazard Communication training updates are required annually.
  • Must be knowledgeable of OSHA and CLIA requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Must maintain yearly health maintenance records by obtaining TB skin testing and completing the hepatitis series.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school graduate or GED equivalent. Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience relative to the position. Must possess good telephone etiquette, public relations skills, and effective interpersonal skills. One or more years of work experience in a medical setting with knowledge of medical terminology, CPT coding, and billing experience involving Medicaid, Medicare, and other third-party insurance carriers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibilities described in this job description. Requires human relations skills to deal effectively with patients and visitors in person or by telephone. Must have keyboard experience and knowledge of medical records and insurance billing. Must possess the basic ability to operate a multi-line telephone, copier, adding machine, fax machine, and other office equipment.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations: CPR, CMA, RMA.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. Requires the use of office equipment such as copiers, computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, calculators, and fax machines. Requires normal vision range. Requires frequent standing, sitting, bending, stooping, or stretching. Must be able to lift and move patients as needed.
