Overview

This program is a collaborative effort between MaineHealth and Southern Maine Community College (SMCC). This program will start in February 2026, with classes held at SMCC's Brunswick campus.

The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program with MaineHealth, in partnership with Southern Maine Community College, is now accepting applications! This 9-month program will start in February, and will be a mix of classroom and clinical training. Classes are held one day per week at SMCC's Brunswick campus. Apprentices will also work 24 hours/week (3-8 hr days) at a MaineHealth outpatient practice (in Cumberland or York County). Apprentices are paid $18.36 at 40 hrs plus full-time benefits. Candidates who are selected for the program will receive full financial support for schooling, including textbooks and other materials. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in a variety of settings and specialties!

Bus/Metro transportation provided to Brunswick campus (from So Portland campus) if needed.

Responsibilities

Summary: The Apprentice - Medical Assistant role functions in a training capacity and works alongside a mentor in assisting the physicians/advanced practice practitioners in the care and treatment of patients and providing administrative support, while promoting a smooth flow of patients through the office.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  1. Education: High School diploma or GED preferred. Active enrollment and advancement with a grade of C or better in an approved Medical Assisting Apprenticeship Program required.
  2. License/Certifications: Current BLS certification required or must be obtained prior to clinical training. NH Med Tech License is required for those positions located in New Hampshire.
  3. Experience: N/A
