Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP)

What is an Apprenticeship?

  • Apprentices enter a structured training program that offers a combination of online learning and paid on-the-job training plus full-time benefits under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Upon program completion, apprentices earn an industry-recognized credential.
  • Medical Assisting is considered an “apprenticejob” by the US Department of Labor.

Due to recent leadership transitions, we have made the decision to pause our upcoming cohort to ensure we are aligned on program goals and able to provide the best possible experience for everyone. We appreciate your interest and remain committed to continuing the program. Applications will continue to be accepted for our next cohort, which is scheduled to launch in November.

Cohort 17 Launch Date - Monday, November 3rd, 2025

Application Window: November 3 rd - 9 th

Final Hiring Decisions Made By: December 19 th

Potential Start Date of Employment: January 19 th , 2026

Pay:

Offers are determined by experience and internal equity

Salary Range: $15.00 - $24.05 per hour (Hiring Range)

Overview of the UNC Health Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program (MAAP)

During this program, you will complete:

  • Up to 2000 hours or (50 weeks) of on-the-job training
    • Will need to be completed within 12 months
    • Any exceptions will be approved by the manager and the department HR Business Partner
  • 144 hours of online didactic training
    • Will need a 80% minimum average score

By completing all required online classes and training competencies, you will progress through three tollgates:

  • Basic Clinical Apprentice II
  • Intermediate Clinical Apprentice III
  • Participants will be paid for time while training/working in an outpatient clinic and maintaining a full-time Monday through Friday schedule.
  • UNC Health will interview, hire, and train applicants, with or without prior healthcare experience.
  • Medical Assistantapprentices will be assigned Mentor(s)/Care Partner Champions and a Nurse Educator to guide them through the program.
  • Upon program completion, apprentices are required to take the NHA Medical Assistant credentialing/certification exam and obtain their certification within 3 months of the program's completion
  • Once the Medical Assistant certification is obtained, the apprentice will interview with UNC Health Outpatient Services for a permanent position.
  • Have access to current computer technology and internet services to complete the online didactic training
  • Actively participate in the on-site administrative and clinical training through preparation via the use of training materials, including textbook(s), policies and procedures, etc.
  • Openly accept feedback from administrative leaders, mentors, journeymen, and coaches.
  • Meet or exceed all standards of performance, including time and attendance.
  • Remain in good standing throughout the work commitment period.
  • Enter into the program with the intent to graduate and be promoted to a Medical Assistant I, Certified role in an outpatient clinic for at least two years.

Requirements:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to engage positively with patients and families to work as a team with staff and providers. Ability to use a computer to document required information into the electronic medical record.
