Job Summary

The Medical Assistant provides assistance to a licensed medical provider in clinic and surgical settings, delivering safe, knowledgeable, compassionate and individualized care to all patients.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a patient advocate during exam and treatment.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and record vital signs, weight and height.
  • Show patients to examination rooms, procedure rooms or operative rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Record patients' medical history, medications, allergies, vital statistics and test results in medical records.
  • Ensure proper consent forms are obtained prior to preparing a patient for treatment.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician following safety protocols.
  • Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log and prepare them for testing.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, wound care instructions and physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Assist physicians in patient examination and treatment, handing instruments, giving injections and removing sutures.
  • Under provider direction, authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping rooms tidy and the sterile field organized.
  • Inspect sterile items prior to use and lay supplies on the sterile field.
  • Assist physicians with surgical procedures while maintaining the sterile field.
  • Assess the patient’s condition throughout the exam, procedure or surgery and notify physician and RN of any distress.
  • Clean rooms and medical equipment between patients and at the end of the day.
  • Dispose of infection waste and biohazard materials appropriately.
  • Schedule appointments and coordinate testing and admissions.
  • Change dressings on wounds.
  • Greet patients arriving at the office or clinic.
  • Inventory supplies and equipment, keeping rooms stocked.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Document all procedures accurately and promptly.
  • Respond to emergency situations in accordance with nursing standards, policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Assist physicians in patient, employee or visitor medical emergencies and ensure proper documentation.
  • Inventory and order medical emergency supplies monthly and ensure equipment is functional.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures, supporting a culture of high quality and excellent customer service.
  • Perform other duties as necessary or beneficial to the organization.
Qualifications
  • Experience: One (1)+ year of experience in a medical setting (preferred).
  • Knowledge: Medical terminology, sterile technique, anatomy, medications, HIPAA guidelines, state and federal regulations.
  • Skills: Math and analytical ability, basic to intermediate computer operation, proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Personal Qualities: Detail oriented, professional attitude, reliable, effective communication in English (verbal and written), interpersonal and customer‑service skills.
  • Management: Organizational skills supporting leadership of the function; ability to follow or provide clear written and verbal instructions.
