Our practice is seeking a full‑time Medical Assistant to support our surgeon, who holds double board certification in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine and specializes in treating sports‑related injuries in both adolescents and adults.
This position is responsible for performing daily administrative and clinical duties to facilitate efficient operations in an outpatient clinic setting. The role provides support in delivering safe, quality care and customer service to patients, physicians/providers and other members of the clinical care team.
Responsibilities
Patient Examination / Treatment
- Escorts patients to exam rooms on a timely basis and informs team members regarding delays when applicable.
- Prepares patients for appropriate examination, triaging and, as necessary, for radiologic studies, cast removal etc.
- Assists physicians as needed in the patient examination process.
- Evaluates need for wound care, if any, and ensures adequate provision of care and patient education.
- Provides for splint/cast applications and removals when applicable.
- Processes prescriptions per physician order and instructs patients regarding medication side effects.
- Prepares injectable medications and equipment needed.
- Coordinates referrals for ongoing services/needs (e.g., therapy services, home health, surgical procedures, DME, etc.).
- Acts as a patient intermediary/liaison for resolution of patient problems.
- Fulfills environmental responsibilities, which may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment; maintaining infection control as regulated by OSHA; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance; ordering, sorting and storing supplies; restocking rooms.
- Fulfills patient‑care responsibilities, which may include checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients, assisting with walking and transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, collecting patient history, performing screenings, assisting physicians/nurses/doctor's assistants with procedures, charting, relaying instructions to patients/families, and answering calls.
Physician Liaison Activities
- Responds to incoming phone calls and determines the best resolution method through identification of the most appropriate respondent.
- Channels requests appropriately to ensure resolution.
- Secures charts related to diagnostic tests, physical/occupational therapy reports, etc., discusses issues with physicians, and completes chart notes as appropriate. Assists in securing missing diagnostic codes/information on charge tickets.
Appointment Scheduling
- Assists in scheduling of appointments for new and established patients.
- Discusses with physician special‑needs patient appointments, supplies medical charts for review, and secures appointment approvals for visits outside routine scheduling templates.
Correspondence (Written/Faxed/Verbal)
- Sends prescriptions for therapy, orthotics, return‑to‑work notes, gym notes, etc. as requested.
- Provides workers’‑compensation carriers with updated status on patients.
- Completes “Attending physician” statements, narrative summaries for attorneys, handicap parking permits, jury‑duty requests, disability forms, PE excuse notes, etc.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities such as sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x‑ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, completing forms, scheduling appointments/tests/surgeries, verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics, and managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately.
Support Activities
- Prepares clinical charts prior to patient appointment, ensuring data such as x‑rays, MRI/dexa scans, lab results, reports from outside sources, and authorizations for injections are secured.
- Notifies management when clinic supplies are low.
- Ensures that exam rooms, cast rooms, etc. are clean, orderly, and fully stocked at the end of clinics.
Operational
- Participates in learning new systems as required for the service area.
- Provides informational contact for patients and families, notifying them of delays, directing them, responding appropriately to inquiries or complaints, and maintaining a professional image of the organization.
- Attends mandatory in‑service programs to stay abreast of current insurance/registration issues.
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities such as respecting patient rights, responding to emergency codes, and sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly.
Requirements
- Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program is a plus.
- Maintains CPR certification.
- Experience in an orthopedic healthcare setting is preferred.
- Able to multi‑task and work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Possesses good working knowledge of practice management and EHR software, Google products, Microsoft Office and Windows‑based applications.
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well and communicate professionally with physicians, patients and staff at all levels, and maintain constructive working relationships over time.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
- Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye‑hand coordination.
- Involves standing and walking.
- Requires occasional lifting associated with patient transfers (up to 35 lbs.).
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $18–$25 per hour based on education and experience.
Base salary offers may vary based on location, skills and experience.
