Job summary

RWJBarnabas Health in Toms River, NJ is seeking a Medical Assistant to support the NJ Heart & Vascular Specialist in a dual clinical and clerical role. You will coordinate nurse station activities, obtain vital signs, perform EKGs and phlebotomy, document orders in Epic, maintain patient charts, schedule tests, and assist with handoffs and staff training, all within a patient-centered, growth-minded team.

Qualifications

  • Schedule: Full-time status, 40 hours per week, day shift.
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Certifications: AHA BCLS required; Nurse's Aide preferred.
  • Technical: Epic system training. Strong computer/printer troubleshooting.
  • Communication: Excellent problem-solving and bilingual Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage reception and clerical operations at the nurse's station, routing communications.
  • Transcribe and enter orders and charges into the system.
  • Prepare and maintain patient charts; file diagnostic results timely.
  • Provide direct patient care under nurse supervision; greet and orient patients.
  • Obtain and report vital signs; conduct essential clinical testing (EKGs, phlebotomy).
  • Coordinate patient schedules for tests and activities; ensure completion.
  • Maintain unit flow and safety; manage supplies and linen.
  • Participate in shift handoffs and SBAR communications.
  • Support training and onboarding of new staff; attend required meetings.

Pay Range: $23.06 - $29.35 per hour

A typical day for a Medical Assistant may include:
  • Managing reception and clerical operations at the nurse's station by answering phones politely, greeting visitors, and routing communication effectively.
  • Transcribing and entering medical orders and charges accurately into the computer system while keeping the healthcare team updated on changes.
  • Preparing and maintaining patient charts, routinely filing diagnostic results and reports in a timely manner.
  • Providing direct care to patients under nurse supervision, including welcoming patients, introducing yourself, and acclimating them to the environment.
  • Obtaining and reporting vital signs to the professional nursing staff while actively rounding to improve overall patient outcomes.
  • Performing essential clinical testing such as EKGs, phlebotomy, and other technical medical procedures within your scope.
  • Coordinating patient schedules for tests and activities, following up diligently to ensure successful completion.
  • Maintaining unit flow and safety by ordering inventory to par levels, managing courier tasks, clearing hallways of excess equipment, and emptying linen hampers.
  • Participating in shift handoffs and nurse-to-tech reports utilizing structured SBAR communication.
  • Supporting a collaborative workplace by contributing to workgroups, assisting in the orientation of new employees, and attending required staff meetings.

To be considered for this Medical Assistant opportunity, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Schedule: Full-time status working 40 hours per week on the day shift. Monday to Friday 8am - 4:30pm
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent standard.
  • Certifications: Current American Heart Association BCLS certification required. Nurse's Aide certification is preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Medical technology skills required. Strong ability to troubleshoot basic computer and printer issues. Must successfully complete Epic system training upon hire.
  • Communication: Excellent problem-solving skills. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is preferred to support diverse patient needs.
