Job summary

Salem Health is seeking a Medical Assistant for Salem Hospital's Surgery Clinic. The position offers full-time, 40 hours/week, non-exempt, with four 10-hour shifts from 7:00 am to 5:30 pm and no weekends.

You will perform clinical assessments, coordinate orders, document in Epic Ambulatory, and support patient safety and care continuity in a fast-paced clinic.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid, current Medical Assistant certification or registration from a nationally recognized credentialing agency.
  • Credentials listed above are commonly accepted MA credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients, recognize condition changes and promptly communicate critical findings to the physician.
  • Obtain histories, vital signs and pertinent clinical information, reassessing after interventions.
  • Prioritize patient care and initiate interventions to support safety.
  • Coordinate physician orders, anticipate diagnostics and initiate testing per protocols.
  • Perform waived laboratory testing, quality control and proficiency testing.
  • Administer medications within scope of practice following clinic protocols.
  • Support efficient patient flow and collaborate with team to maintain continuity of care.
  • Provide discharge instructions, follow-up info and community resources.
  • Maintain clean, stocked exam rooms and manage supply rotation.
  • Accurately document encounters, calls, refills in Epic Ambulatory and assign charges.

Department: Surgery Clinic

Your role with us

As a medical assistant at Salem Health, you will play a vital role in supporting patient care by performing clinical assessments, facilitating provider-directed care, and ensuring timely documentation and coordination. What you'll do
  • Assess patients, recognize changes in condition and promptly communicate critical findings or potential life-threatening situations to the physician.
  • Obtain patient histories, vital signs and pertinent clinical information while reassessing patients following therapeutic interventions.
  • Prioritize patient care, identify needs outside standard clinic protocols and initiate appropriate interventions to support patient safety.
  • Coordinate physician orders, anticipate diagnostic needs and initiate testing according to established protocols.
  • Perform waived laboratory testing, quality control and proficiency testing while maintaining required competencies.
  • Administer medications within scope of practice while following established medication safety, security and clinic protocols.
  • Support efficient patient flow by adapting to changing department needs and collaborating with team members to maintain continuity of care.
  • Provide patients and families with clear discharge instructions, follow-up care information and appropriate community resources.
  • Maintain clean, safe and well-stocked exam rooms while ensuring appropriate supply rotation.
  • Accurately document patient encounters, telephone calls, refill requests and other clinical activities in Epic Ambulatory and assign appropriate facility charges.
Required qualifications
  • Certification:Must possess a valid, current Medical Assistant certification or registration from a nationally recognized credentialing agency.

Acceptable Credentials Include:

  • CMA(Certified Medical Assistant) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA
  • RMA(Registered Medical Assistant) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • CCMA(Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • NCMA(Nationally Certified Medical Assistant) – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Or an equivalent medical assistant credential.
Additional information
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required within 30 days of hire.
  • Candidates will thrive in this role by demonstrating effective interpersonal and communication skills that support clear, respectful interactions across a variety of platforms, including in-person, phone, electronic, and written exchanges.
  • Success in this position is supported by a strong foundation in patient care techniques, manual dexterity to carry out clinical procedures safely, and the ability to interpret clinical information accurately through adequate hearing and vision.
  • The ability to remain organized while prioritizing tasks in a dynamic environment contributes to smooth clinic operations and patient safety.
  • Candidates will also need the physical capability to lift, pull, and reposition patients and equipment—at least 50 pounds unassisted and over 100 pounds with assistance—to ensure safe, effective care delivery.
