Job summary

Allies for Health and Wellbeing is seeking a versatile Medical Assistant with EMT/MA background for a hybrid role blending station outpatient clinic support with a mobile medical unit. You will assist licensed providers, manage patient intake, and support community outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities include triage, injections, venipuncture, point-of-care testing, and ensuring safety during mobile deployments. Prior outpatient/EMS experience preferred.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Position Overview

We are seeking a versatile, community-minded Medical Assistant with a background as either an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or a Medical Assistant (MA). As part of the Allies healthcare staff in this hybrid role, the Medical Assistant is responsible for splitting time between supporting our stationary outpatient medical clinic and operating our community-facing mobile medical unit. As such, the Medical Assistant will leverage clinical training to deliver high-quality care, manage patient intake, assist licensed healthcare providers in both traditional clinic rooms and diverse community settings, and be an advocate for ALLIES’ mission. The Medical Assistant will work collaboratively with other clinic and agency staff, and a multitude of agencies. In the event of an emergency, the Medical Assistant will serve as a first responder.

Responsibilities

Mobile Medical Unit Operations

• Vehicle Operation & Logistics (EMT-focused / Authorized Drivers): Safely drive, maneuver, and park the mobile medical unit (large custom van or commercial vehicle) to designated community outreach sites. Perform pre-trip safety inspections and manage onboard power systems (generators/shore power).
• Community Site Setup: Set up and break down outdoor clinic infrastructure (awnings, ramps, tables, signs) and configure mobile hotspots/electronics for remote EHR (Electronic Health Record) connectivity.
• Community Triage: Conduct rapid patient intake, registration, and vital sign checks in non-traditional environments, adapting safely to changing weather and venue conditions.
• Field Emergency Response: Serve as the immediate first line of defense for on-site medical emergencies, utilizing advanced field assessment skills to stabilize acute patients and coordinate with local 911 dispatch.

Outpatient Clinic Operations

• Patient Intake: Escort patients to exam rooms, measure and record accurate vital signs (BP, pulse, temp, O2 sat), and document detailed medical histories and chief complaints in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Provider Assistance: Assist physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants with routine physical, minor procedures, wound care, and splinting.
• Laboratory & Point-of-Care Testing: Perform venipuncture for lab specimen collection, accurately label samples, and run rapid point-of-care tests (blood glucose, urine dips, rapid strep/flu/COVID/HIV, urine pregnancy).
• Injections. Administering IM, Sub Q and intradermal injections.
• Clinic Administration (MA-focused): Support the administrative workflow as needed, including answering phone inquiries, scheduling follow-up appointments, processing prior authorizations, and managing records.
• Supply & Inventory Control: Clean, sanitize, and restock exam rooms and mobile unit cabinets. Conduct daily quality checks on emergency crash carts, medical equipment, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

Requirements

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The Medical Assistant should have demonstrated experience in the following areas:

• Strong clinical assessment skills with the ability to quickly recognize a deteriorating patient condition.
• High level of cultural competence and excellent communication skills for engaging with diverse, underserved, or rural populations.
• Proficiency using Electronic Health Record (EHR) platforms and mobile technology.

Education & Experience

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited EMT-Basic/Paramedic program OR an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• Licensure / Certifications (One of the following sets is required):
  • For EMT candidates: Active State or National Registry EMT Certification (NREMT), plus a current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
  • For MA candidates: PCT, Certified Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or CCMA) credential, plus current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
  • 10 years of full-time experience in lieu of certification.
• Driver Requirements: Valid State Driver’s License with a clean driving record (MVR check required). Comfort or experience driving oversized vehicles is highly preferred.
• Experience: Minimum 4-5 years of experience in an outpatient clinic, urgent care, emergency department, or active EMS field service.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Frequent loading and unloading of clinical supplies, ramps, or awnings weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Prolonged periods of driving, sitting, standing, and walking.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during mobile unit community deployments.
• Assisting wheelchair users into the mobile medical unit.

The designated budget for the Medical Assistant position is between $18/hour-$20/hour with distinctions made for education and direct service experience with client populations similar to Allies’. We comply with EEOC.
