Carolina Oncology Specialists, located in Hickory, NC, is seeking a Medical Assistant to support physicians and the healthcare team in a fast-paced oncology clinic. You will prepare patients, document information, assist with examinations, and contribute to high-quality cancer care.

Responsibilities include rooming patients, documenting vitals and histories, assisting during procedures, maintaining sterile technique, and ensuring EMR accuracy.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Previous medical assistant experience in a physician practice or specialty clinic preferred.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification preferred (CMA, RMA, NCMA, or equivalent).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and room patients in a timely and professional manner.
  • Record patient vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, height, and weight.
  • Collect and document patient medical histories, medications, allergies, and chief complaints.
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms with supplies and equipment.
  • Assist physicians and APPs during exams and procedures.
  • Provide procedural support for bone marrow biopsies and other procedures as directed.
  • Explain procedures, position patients, and answer questions within scope of practice.
  • Maintain sterile technique and infection control.
  • Assist with specimen collection, labeling, handling per protocols.
  • Document patient care in EMR accurately.
  • Coordinate patient flow to maximize clinic efficiency and patient experience.
  • Clean and restock rooms between visits.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and health care team.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Title: Medical Assistant
Department: Clinical Operations
Reports To: APP Manager
Location: Hickory, NC
Position Summary

The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and the healthcare team to ensure efficient patient flow and exceptional patient care. This position is responsible for preparing patients for examinations and treatments, obtaining and documenting patient information, assisting with clinical procedures, and supporting the delivery of high-quality oncology services in a compassionate and professional manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet and room patients in a timely and professional manner.

  • Obtain and accurately record patient vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, height, and weight.

  • Collect and document patient medical histories, current medications, allergies, chief complaints, and other relevant clinical information.

  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms, ensuring appropriate supplies and equipment are available and maintained.

  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during patient examinations and office procedures.

  • Provide direct procedural support for bone marrow biopsies and other clinical procedures as directed by the physician.

  • Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the process, positioning patients appropriately, and addressing questions within scope of practice.

  • Maintain sterile technique and adhere to infection control and safety standards.

  • Assist with specimen collection, labeling, and handling according to established protocols.

  • Document patient care activities accurately and completely within the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Coordinate patient flow to maximize clinic efficiency while maintaining a positive patient experience.

  • Clean and stock examination and procedure rooms between patient visits.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA requirements.

  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard office technology.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities effectively.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching throughout the workday.

  • Ability to assist patients with mobility as needed.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform clinical procedures and operate medical equipment.

Work Environment

This position works in a physician practice and oncology clinic setting with frequent interaction with patients undergoing cancer treatment. Appropriate personal protective equipment and infection control procedures must be followed at all times.
