Michigan Oculofacial Specialists (MOCS) is seeking an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant to support clinical and administrative operations in our Clinton Township and Troy locations. The role involves preparing patients, assisting doctors with examinations and minor procedures, and ensuring smooth clinic workflow.

The position requires basic ophthalmic knowledge, strong communication, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ophthalmic exams and terminology is preferred.
  • Experience with medical terminology, documentation, and ophthalmology or optometry is helpful.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical: Prepare patients for examination, take ocular and systemic history, record visual acuity.
  • Clinical: Prep injections, medications, and sterile field; assist with in-office procedures.
  • Clinical: Administer topical ophthalmic and oral medications under doctor supervision.
  • Clinical: Assist with patient education and maintain exam room cleanliness and order.
  • Administrative: Report inventory needs and participate in daily team huddles.
  • Administrative: Complete tasks as needed and maintain professionalism.

Company Overview

Michigan Oculofacial Specialists specializes in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. This unique specialty treats the eyelids, eyebrows, tear duct system, orbit, and surrounding areas of the face. Our practice has offices located in Troy and Clinton Township where we see patients and perform minor procedures. Truvista Surgery Center is our state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgical Center that is located near our Troy office.

Position Summary

A medical assistant supports both clinical and administrative operations within a medical practice setting, ensuring smooth operations in medical settings. The medical assistant assists doctors with patient acre, preparing patients for examinations and assisting with minor medical procedures.

Responsibilities
Clinical
  • Prepare patients for examination or treatment, taking an ocular and systemic history and accurately recording visual acuity
  • Prep injections, medications, and sterile field for in-office procedures; assist doctor or surgeon with in-office and minor procedures
  • Administer topical ophthalmic and oral systemic medications under the direction of the doctor.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
Administrative
  • Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering
  • Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
  • Understand and accept responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer
  • Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self‑motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
Essential Skills
  • Basic knowledge of ophthalmic and optometric exams, procedures, and terminology can be obtained via on-the-job training.
  • Basic knowledge and competency of the technical skills listed below are required for a medical assistant working in an ophthalmology/optometry setting. This knowledge may be obtained via on-the-job training during the first ninety (90) days of on boarding into this position.
  • History Taking (including basic pharmacologic understanding of common ophthalmic & systemic medications)
  • Visual acuity
  • Pupil Assessment
  • Intraocular Pressure Measurement with handheld, automatic tonometer
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • CMA certification eligible; current certification preferred
  • Prior experience with medical terminology, documentation, and ophthalmology or optometry preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
