BASIC FUNCTIONUnder the direction of the Healthcare Providers and Organizational Protocols, the position of Medical Assistant provides direct patient care along with clinical and administrative assistance to the healthcare provider(s), ensuring smooth patient flow and efficient clinical operations.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES1) Clinical Responsibilities:a. Obtain medical history from patients and record vital signsb. Accurate documentation of services providedc. Prepare patients for examinations, assist with medical procedures and treatmentsd. Administer medications as directed by healthcare providers or protocole. Perform basic laboratory tests and collect specimens for testingf. Provide Patient Education as directed by provider or protocolg. Instruct patients about medication and special diets as directed by healthcare providers or protocolh. Conducts basic first aid and CPRi. Awareness of infection control protocols2) Administrative Responsibilities:a. Communicate with patients and their families regarding healthcare needs and concernsb. Schedule appointments for patients and maintain medical records as neededc. Answer phones, properly document messages, and provide information to patients as neededd. Order and maintain medical supplies, lab supplies, and other equipment as needed in the exam room and clinical sitee. Assist Front Office Associates with scheduling patients when neededf. Manage Patient Referrals to specialists or other services when needed or directedg. Manage and process any prior authorization for medications or medical services as needed3) Communication and Interpersonal Responsibilities:a. Effective verbal and written communication with patients and healthcare professionalsb. Active listening and empathy when interacting with patientsc. Maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy per HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelinesd. Collaborating with the healthcare team, both internal and external stakeholders4) Performs other duties as assigneda. Effectively carries out tasks and responsibilities beyond core job duties and primary role. The additional duties may vary from time to time and encompass a wide range of activities that contribute to the overall success of the organization (floating, schedule variations, assisting co-workers, patients, visitors, customers, leaders, and other stakeholders in support of the organization.)QUALIFICATIONS:GENERAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT1) Functions effectively in response to workflow or ongoing direction by supervisors2) Understands and functions in a customer first service capacity3) Self-motivated4) Strong initiative- looking for ways to assist the provider without being prompted5) Knowledge of maintaining EHR (Electronic Health Record)6) Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others7) Possesses a basic level of computational and computer skills and mathematical knowledge typically acquired through completion of a high school program or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES1) Must possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.2) Required: 1-3 months of related experience3) Preferred: 3-6 months of related experienceLICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS1) Required: Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Training Program2) Required: CPR Certification3) Required: Valid state Driver’s License4) Preferred: Automobile insurance with reliable transportation5) Will Consider: Nurse Assistant certification and/or relevant work experience to be substituted for formal training6) Preferred: Certification Completion as a Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical AssistantTECHNICAL SKILLS1) Demonstrates necessary proficiency with healthcare electronic clinical systems, including EHR and scheduling systems, in use at the health center.2) Familiarity with medical terminology, procedures, and pharmacology, including medication administration procedures3) Proficient with general medical machines and equipment: Patient Scales, stethoscope, glucometers, PFT testing, Nebulizer treatment administration, medication administration, lab, EKG4) Proficient with typical office equipment: Copier, telephone, Fax5) Basic Typing skillsCOMMUNICATIONS SKILLS1) Possesses a basic level of written and verbal communications skills typically acquired through completion of a high school program or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.2) Preferred: Bilingual skills in English and Spanish language (Spanish Competency available)
