Job summary

Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program in Boston is seeking a Medical Assistant to provide medical office and clinical support under nurses and clinic policies.

You will collect patient data, assist with examinations, perform basic tests, and help coordinate care in a team setting; bilingual skills (Spanish or Haitian Creole) are a plus; CPR/BLS/ACLS training must be completed within 60 days if not already.

Qualifications

  • Medical terminology and vital signs knowledge.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier).
  • Proficient reading and writing in English; phlebotomy preferred.
  • Strong interest in serving vulnerable populations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with RN and multidisciplinary team for admissions, assessments and task prioritization.
  • Accurately collect patient data (vital signs, weights, A1c).
  • Maintain confidentiality, patient rights and dignity.
  • Perform basic patient testing (guiac, urine dip, glucose, fingerstick, O2).
  • Support nurses, providers and MAs during treatments and set-ups.
  • Attend daily huddles and team meetings; participate in quality improvement.

Job Summary

Hours: Full Time, 40 hrs per week; Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm

We are looking for a Medical Assistant to perform medical office and clinical support in administrative and clinical areas. Under the direction of registered nurses, medical assistants, and clinic policies, you will participate in patient care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary clinic team. You will work with other medical assistants, registered nurses, and providers, determine appropriate assignments and priorities, and gather patient clinical information during triage. You will communicate the status of delegated tasks and the outcomes of patient data findings. The clinic is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8am-5pm and Tuesday, Thursday 8am-8pm.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties/Clinical Support:

  • Collaborate with the RN and multidisciplinary team to conduct admission interviews, assessments, and determine work assignments and priorities. Communicate status of delegated tasks and outcomes of patient data findings to the appropriate team member, while maintaining timely verbal communication for good patient care.
  • Accurately collect requested patient data (e.g., vital signs, weights, A1c).
  • Treat patients in a manner that maintains confidentiality, patient rights, and dignity.
  • Perform basic patient testing (e.g., guiac, urine dip, glucose, fingerstick, oxygen saturation).
  • Assist nurses, providers, and MAs during complex treatments/procedures, including preps and set-ups for examinations or treatments.
  • Check inventories and restock as needed; maintain appropriate equipment logs and records.
  • Attend daily team huddles when in clinic; attend clinic staff meetings and team break-out sessions.
  • Provide education to patients regarding Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH).
  • Participate in ongoing clinical quality improvement and in care planning for high-risk or enhanced care patients.
  • Escort and assist patients with transportation needs to and from the ED or to appointments as deemed appropriate by staff.
  • Answer phones appropriately as needed.
  • Support and attend in-service education as required.

Administrative/Clerical Support:

  • Confirm and communicate patient appointments to patients and staff as needed.
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments and new consultations.
  • Maintain clinic files and patient records.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications

Basic Knowledge/Skills:

  • Medical terminology; Vital Signs
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment (fax, copier)
  • Proficient reading and writing skills in English; Phlebotomy preferred
  • Strong interest in serving vulnerable populations

Experience and Education:

  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Life support training certification (e.g., CPR, BLS, ACLS) from a hands-on, in-person course. If not certified prior to start, certification must be submitted within 60 days of start date.
  • Experience in a medical environment preferred.
  • Administrative experience preferred.
  • Computer literacy and skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral); good organizational skills; good customer service skills.
  • Ability to speak Spanish or Haitian Creole is helpful.
Compensation and Benefits
  • The compensation ranges from $22.25 to $35.60 per hour, based on years of experience.
  • BHCHP full-time employees are eligible for a competitive time off program, health, dental, and vision insurance, 403(b) retirement savings plan, pre-tax MBTA pass program with 40% discount, and additional compensation for demonstrated bilingual proficiency. Benefits are prorated for part-time employees.
