Job summary

Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital is seeking a Medical Assistant/Office Clerk to support both clinical and clerical operations in a fast-paced clinic setting.

Responsibilities include assisting with staff scheduling, patient vitals, specimen collection, phlebotomy, radiologic exams, and patient education. The role requires attention to regulatory guidelines and strong teamwork with physicians and nurses.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read, spell and write clearly.
  • Has computer experience and has worked with Excel and Word programs.
  • Has the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must be oriented to and maintain competence with patients across age groups: Infant to Geriatric.
  • Requires ability to sit, stand, lift up to 35 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a resource to clinical and clerical staff.
  • Assists in developing MA and Office Clerk schedules to ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Assigns daily tasks to Medical Assistants and Clerks.
  • Reviews diagnostic results to monitor follow-up compliance.
  • Maintains medical and clerical supply inventory; orders supplies.
  • Assists in departmental orientation for new staff.
  • Identifies operational issues and supports improvement opportunities.
  • Maintains training materials and documentation for clinic staff.
  • Supports development and revision of department policies and procedures.
  • Supports quality improvement through data collection and reporting.
  • Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, BP, O2).
  • Assists with patient mobility and positioning.
  • Reports patient status changes to nursing/physician staff.
  • Collects specimens, performs CLIA tests, reports results.
  • Initiates CPR as needed.
  • Communicates with patients/families with HIPAA compliance.
  • Transports and repositions patients as required.
  • Organizes workload to complete daily assignments.
  • Participates in QA, assessment and improvement activities.
  • Provides patient education.
  • Performs radiologic exams and assists with procedures.
  • Performs phlebotomy and capillary punctures.
  • Collects patient information and changes dressings.
  • Administers treatments and medications per clinic policy.
  • Ensures cleanliness of office space per regulatory guidelines.

  • Assists with the daily routine by assigning daily tasks to Medical Assistants and Clerks.
  • Assists with reviewing diagnostic results to monitor the compliance of follow-up.

  • Assists in the orientation of department employees.
  • Assists in the identification of operational issues and operational improvement opportunities, and assists staff.
  • Maintains training and orientation materials and documentation for clinic staff.
  • Assists with the development and ongoing review and revision of department policies and procedures.
  • Assists with quality improvement activities through data collection and report completion.
  • Takes vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, O2 saturation, blood pressure, height, weight & visual acuity).
  • Assists with activities in patient mobility and positioning.
  • Reports patient status changes to and assists the nurse/physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant.
  • Collects specimens, performs CLIA waived tests, and reports results to provider.
  • Initiates CPR.
  • Communicates with patient and/or family, striving for HIPAA compliance.
  • Transports patients by pushing, pulling, lifting, using a wheelchair or cart.
  • Repositions patients with or without mechanical devices by lifting, pulling and pushing.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work to complete daily assignments.
  • Participates in quality assurance, assessment and improvement activities.
  • Provides patient education.
  • Performs radiologic exams.
  • Assists with procedures.
  • Performs phlebotomies and capillary punctures on patients.
  • Collects patient information.
  • Changes dressings.
  • Administers treatments.
  • Administers medications according to clinic policy.
  • Ensures cleanliness of office suite, adhering to JCAHO, OSHA and all other regulatory guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to read, spell and write clearly; accurate typing, filing and calculating skills.
  • Has computer experience and has worked with Excel and Word programs.
  • Has the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Will be oriented to and maintain competence in working with patients in the following age categories: Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric patients.
  • May require constant sitting; requires occasional standing and walking.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries up to 35 lbs.; may require pushing and pulling up to 35 lbs.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination, finger and manual dexterity.
  • Requires correct hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions.
  • Some exposure to communicable diseases, sharps and hazardous materials is required.
  • May require potential exposure to body fluids and radiation.
  • Requires occasional bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping and kneeling.
  • Occasional reaching and overhead work are required.
  • Requires occasional grasping.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols.
  • Ability to use office equipment such as computer, typewriter, telephone, copier and fax machine.
  • Primarily Monday through Friday on a scheduled shift, includes working weekends & holidays with potential for overtime.
