Job summary

United Digestive is seeking a Medical Assistant to support physicians and management with clinical, clerical, and organizational tasks focused on patient care in a gastroenterology setting. You will manage patient charts, assist with tests and procedures, and communicate findings to physicians and patients.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, CPR preferred, and 2-3 years GI experience; proficiency with EMR and MS Office is expected, with HIPAA confidentiality emphasized.

Qualifications

  • Current Certified or Registered Medical Assistant, or equivalent experience required.
  • CPR certification preferred.
  • 2-3 years of gastroenterology or GI specialty experience preferred.
  • Medical Assistant must be computer literate and able to operate healthcare systems and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors schedule and organizes patient flow for physician visits or in-office procedures.
  • Accompanies patients to exam rooms, triages, collects patient history, and provides assessments as delegated.
  • Schedules and obtains results for testing and communicates results to physicians and patients.
  • Performs or assists with in-office ancillary services, procedures, and specialty services.
  • Manages patient charts and ensures clinical information is complete in the EMR.
  • Prepares charts in the EMR prior to physician visits according to practice process.
  • Review and understand drug uses and dosage requirements; ensure sample medications are up to date.
  • Enters requests for prescription refills into the EMR.
  • Maintains exam rooms and equipment per infection control standards.
  • Counsels patients with information regarding medical treatment or procedures.
  • Responds to emails/voicemails and returns patient calls promptly.
  • Works with UD staff to guarantee timely payment on patient accounts.
  • Adheres to HIPAA and maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Participates in staff meetings and cross-trains for other office functions as needed.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

United Digestive’s (UD) Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians and management with all clinical, clerical, and organizational tasks revolving around patient care. Manages patient charts and assumes responsibility for resolving patient requests including test results, prescription refills, and general healthcare questions.


REPORTS TO: Practice Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Monitors schedule and organizes patient flow for physician office visits or in-office procedures

  • Accompanies patients to exam room, triages, collects patient history, and provides physical assessments as delegated by the physicians

  • Schedules and obtains results for testing, procedures, and other services as ordered by the physician; interprets and accurately communicates results to physicians and patients as necessary

  • Performs or assists physician with in-office ancillary services, procedures, and specialty services

  • Manages patient charts to ensure clinical information is complete, including scanning forms into the EMR in a timely manner

  • Prepares charts in the EMR prior to the physician visit according to practice process

  • Has knowledge of drug uses and dosage requirements; ensures sample medications are up to date

  • Enters requests for prescription refills into the EMR

  • Performs upkeep for exam rooms with regards to sterilization and infection control, supplies, and equipment

  • Accurately provides or counsels patients and/or relatives with pertinent information regarding medical treatment or procedures

  • Answers emails and voicemails and returns patient calls in a timely and efficient manner

  • Completes requests for information from other UD staff and ensures that they are handled promptly and effectively to guarantee payment on patient accounts

  • Abides by and promotes HIPAA compliance; maintains strictest confidentiality with regards to patient information

  • Participates in staff meetings as directed by the Practice Manager

  • Cross trains and performs other office functions including phone triage, check-in/check-out, scheduling, pre-certification, or other duties as directed by the Practice Manager

  • Performs any other duties and/or special projects as assigned


REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Current Certified or Registered Medical Assistant, or equivalent experience required; CPR certification preferred; 2-3 years of specialty clinical experience, gastroenterology experience preferred. Medical Assistant must be computer literate and able to operate various healthcare systems and multiple Microsoft Office applications.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. Travel required as business needs dictate.
