Job summary

Mount Carmel Health System seeks a Paramedic for the Trauma II Emergency Department at Mount Carmel East in Columbus, Ohio. The role requires three 12-hour night shifts per week from 6pm to 6:30am with rotating weekends and holidays.

You will provide emergent patient care, initiate IV/IO access, manage cardiac rhythms, administer meds per protocol, and support trauma, stroke, STEMI and sepsis responses under physician direction. A strong focus on teamwork and patient safety is essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Paramedic certification in Ohio required; ACLS and BLS required; PALS preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates respiratory interventions including oxygen therapy and preparation for intubation.
  • Initiates and discontinuues IV/IO access as directed by physician; uses ultrasound as needed.
  • Interprets cardiac rhythms and initiates appropriate treatment (CPR/defibrillation).
  • Transports and monitors stable telemetry and non-telemetry patients.
  • Maintains radio communication with EMS units and hospital staff.
  • Performs patient care activities as delegated by the RN and within scope of practice.
  • Performs CLIA-waived testing, phlebotomy, and basic laboratory specimen collection.
  • Participates in trauma, stroke, STEMI and sepsis alerts and resuscitation efforts.
  • Performs wound care, sterile technique, and suture removal when appropriate.
  • Assists with triage and door-to-EKG benchmarks as assigned.

Description

Position Purpose: In accordance with the Mission and Guiding Behaviors; the Paramedic will provide patient care in an atmosphere sensitive to each person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Functions within the standards, policies, procedures and guidelines of the Organization. This Paramedic position will be working in our Trauma II Emergency Department at Mount Carmel East on nights three 12-hour shifts per week from 6pm - 6:30am with rotating weekends and holidays.

What You Will Do:
  • Initiates respiratory interventions including oxygen therapy and assistance with preparation for intubation per physician order or protocol
  • Initiates and discontinues intravenous lines and intraosseous (IO) access as requested by the physician, including use of the ultrasound machine
  • Interprets cardiac rhythms and initiates appropriate treatment (CPR/defibrillation)
  • Transports and monitors stable telemetry and non-telemetry patients
  • Maintains professional radio communication with incoming EMS units
  • Performs patient care activities as appropriately delegated by the RN in a timely manner
  • Performs treatments and procedures according to approved standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Verifies and implements physician/other licensed independent practitioner’s orders.
  • Administers medications, according to the organization’s standards, policies, procedures and/or guidelines.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency procedures within the scope of practice under the direction of the physician/other LIP.
  • Practices proper patient identification procedures. Maintains equipment appropriate to the care environment.
  • Establishes priorities for the delivery of care and meets patient needs.
  • Performs visual acuity, eye irrigations and equipment setups
  • Performs CLIA-waived testing as assigned.
  • Performs phlebotomy and obtains lab specimens as ordered.
  • Follows appropriate protocols and participates as a team member for trauma, stroke, STEMI and sepsis alerts, and resuscitation.
  • Performs wound care and practices sterile technique when appropriate
  • Performs suture and staple removal, excluding facial region.
  • Performs foley care and collects specimens.
  • Performs EKG
  • Performs Phlebotomy
  • Performs orthopedic duties
  • Participates in hazardous materials or disaster events
  • Performs duties as assigned in triage including facilitating door to EKG benchmark
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School / GED. Successful completion of an approved course(s) which includes basic patient care skills, EKG and phlebotomy required
  • License / Certification: Current Paramedic Certification in the State of Ohio. ACLS required, Current BLS Healthcare Provider required, PALS preferred
  • Experience: 2-4 years previous patient care experience and/or technical education in health-related field preferred
  • Effective Communication Skills
